Another example of poor adolescent judgment

About a year ago I offered Questor, Jr my Kimber 45ACP Gold Match, which was in fine shape and a really good gun. I just wasn't using it because I already have three target 45s. I would have given him the gun and as much ammo as he wished. Can you imagine that happening to you when you were 16? It would have been like a dream come true for me.

Anyway, he declined because he wasn't particularly interested in pistol shooting. I always used to ask him if he wanted to go to the range and he usually declined. Sometimes he would go to shoot the 22 rifle, or practice for a hunt, or maybe shoot a round of trap. 

I sold the Kimber. I had only been keeping it to see if the boy had an interest in it.

Now everytime I ask him, he wants to go shooting. Fortunately I didn't sell my S&W 41 (a fine .22 pistol), and he can use that. One of these days I'll remind him that he could have had a good 45, and that he's not allowed to use my target pistols, and that I'm not buying another centerfire pistol just for him.

I don't miss that gun, but I wonder if he ever will.

Heck, at least he was honest with you about not wanting it.  He could have taken it and then sold it b/c he didn't want it.  How would have felt then?

Your lucky to have an honest kid quest... thats the sign of a good upbringing.

I agree with SSS amongst children honesty is rare any more. Especially with there parents. I would say you have done a fine job raising him. Now I personally would not have turned it down but im sure he has reasons.

Even if I did not care to shoot the weapon, I still would have taken it as a gift from dad. I think I would have been honest in telling my dad that 45 cal autos do not pull my trigger, but receiving a gift of that quality from my dear old dad would have made my day. I would have accepted it graciously and kept it forever because dad gave it to me.

ME THREE

i  have a remington  45 auto
my dad taught me to shoot  it  at 8 years old
at  16  he was broke  ask what  i wanted for christmas
i  ask  for that  45  he said  i was  too young
told  him  i didn't  need any thing

HE GAVE ME THE GUN  AT  16

i  still  have  it today.............one  of 3 family treasures  have grandfathers 22 but  the  30-30  was stolen

That's all fine and nice, but Questor, how would your son feel if he saw this post on here?  You subject line basically is saying you think he lacks judgment or intellect enough to shut up and take a gift he really didn't want. 

To me the subject title could just as well read, "My feelings are hurt because my son didn't accept a pistol I offered him, I think he is a moron for not taking it."

 I am a teacher and have  a big box of my hunting and gun magazines for the kids to read and take if they want.  I bring in my wife's  Country Living and Woman's Fitness for them as well.  Not a day passes that I do not talk guns or hunting with a student.  Of course, I teach at a little country school.

Many of my students never read anything longer than a text message, and if they will actually read an article on deer stands or turkey hunting then I will give them the magazines to do it with. 

Anyhow, if your son looks back at his teen years and turning down a gun is his biggest mistake, then he did pretty well for himself.

I think it would be a mistake to expect that our kids grow up to be spitting images. Sounds like yours is growing up pretty much as mine did. He isn't into hunting and fishing all that much, but he knows how. He has accepted a few good defensive guns from me and I know he can do about as good as can be done defending my grandkids. Don't give up on him, make sure he knows you don't expect him to be another you, but also be sure he realizes that part of being a man is not being a sheep.

i  gave  my sons  357 mag  handi rifles
they  both  have 38 revolvers
and  we cast and reload these rounds

i  could tell  they weren't thrilled
they  are not exciting  guns

i  can tell they are warming  up to the fact  those  38  are  SO accurate
cheap to feed [conpared to their 30-30s]
and  mild  yet much more than a 22

i just felt  they  needed  a single shot
to force them to focus  on making  one shot count

i wasn't all that trilled  with  hadi rifles  either at first

My son turned 21 this last summer - He had been saving $ for just this opportunity.  He bought a Kimber .45 acp!
