Threading for a 7/8" M/L Breechplug

   I see a number of "wishes for slow twist round ball M/L s  and M/L shotguns. Is it possible to bore regular cartridge/shotgun barrels, of the desired type, to accept the improved design Metrics Unlimited 7/8" plug?    Ken

I sure wouldn't recommend it, you still have a chamber to deal with. Muzzleloaders do not have powder chambers larger than the bore for a reason. While I am not saying it wouldn't work in EVERY case, you wouldn't catch me within a country mile of one.

    Busta, The  barrels built by NEF and H&R were either made from one size blank or many sizes both in diameters and lengths besides the material strengths. A blank of rifle strength material ,chambered for a .357 Mag. should be able to accomodate a 5/8 threaded breech plug,shouldn't it? A .45LC should also. Both would give you the fast twist smaller M/Ls that so many were asking for in their suggestions to Remington. You wanted a 12 ga. M/L Turkey gun and I thought that it too could be fabricated in this manner. These are some ideas that came to mind and I don't have near the background of most of you forum members,so I asked. I was led to believe there was no such thing as a dumb question.   Ken

wouldnt it be easier jus tto get a muzzleloader barrel?  I mean by the time all the work went into this project it would cost more than jus tbuying the barrel and you still woud not have a better set up.

I guess that didn't come accross how I wanted to relay it. What I meant was, like you pointed out, it wouldn't be a problem in EVERY case with chambers that would clean up, but I wouldn't want to be around any with chambers still left after boring and threading for a plug. I don't know the exact dimensions of the bore, grooves, chamber, and throat of the H&R .45 colt, but it is possible that it may clean up for one of the breech plugs. The twist rate is 1:16, I would prefer something in the 1:20 range. The shotguns would need a breech plug about 3-1/2" long to clean up the chambers and forcing cones IMO. One other thing to remember, the 7/8" plug is shorter than the 5/8" plug.
