first barrel fitting.

I have bought a few barrels on the site here and generaly they fit one of my frames.  I recently got a 17 m2  barrel and it was a little short to fit my 17 hmr frame. so I put a small diet coke shim in and it locked up fine. 2 is to tight. I went to range and tested her out.  first couple 5 rd groops seemed big, few inches at 100 yds. but 3rd and 4th were right at an inch with 3 or 4 of the holes significantly less.  I guess we just had to warm up to each other a little, or I had to stop shivering from the snow blowing up my coat tail. So I guess tonight I will have to get busy detempering my .002 feeler guage and JB weld it into place for permanent.  I sure do love the way these little .17s shoot.  Thanks Don.

prior to detempering mmy shims I got to noticing that the dietcoke can side seemed thicker than the feeler blade. I don't have an actual micrometer to measure but did have some tapered slack between surfaces on my shooting rest. The shim actually seems right at .005 instead of .002 of an inch. guess I better examine closer before affixing.  What beverage was it that you measured at .002?

 ??? That was 3yrs ago, it wasn't beer, that's all I can tell ya, don't drink it, don't drink pop either, but the wife does, probably pepsi...maybe?

Maybe these eastern washington cans are a little bit beefier. LOL. Possibly someone with an actual micrometer could measure a represenative sample of different mfr or tyes of beverage, or I would if I had access to a micrometer. This may help prevent someone from permanently affixing a mis-sized shim by accident.  Quick I do greatly appreciate all the time and effort you and the other handiholics put into helping us newbies with handi mods.

It doesn't really make any difference since other test shims may not be the same thickness either, I'm sure there are folks here that have fitted a barrel without a mic, what really matters is how the barrel shoots when you're all done, some just do a temp shim and keep shooting it as is.  I put a piece of brass shim stock in my first H&R about 50yrs ago, that shim was replaced with a pop can shim for my dad to use it for turkey hunting, he killed a turkey with it in 1995, it's still tight, although it hasn't been shot since.  ;)

I just measured an aluminum beer can, (I do have beer in my house, and I drank one just so I could measure it for you) and it is .004 inches.  I don't see anything with using an aluminum shim on a Rim Fire barrel if you keep it greased up.  Larry

I have shot it with the newly fitted can shim and shoots great.  I did put a dab of greese on it and greesed rest of handies at same time.  I simply used a slight bit of stickytack (like playdo) on back to help hold in place.  I think you are right about this aluminum holding till the cows come home.
