sons 30/30 came in

i got the call last night from my ffl that my sons 30/30 was in an that i could pick it up anytime after 3pm today.first thing he ask when he got home of the bus at 2:35 was can we go pickup my gun lol ;D we went an picked it up at about 4 .gun hasnt even been home for hour an hes already gone through a box of shells.its raining out an he didnt care just wanted to shoot his birthday present  ;D ;D.hes walking on air right know hes so happy.have to go buy more shells now.were both going to start learning to reload together.hes 11yr,do any of you guys reload with youre kids,i think it would be good time spent together.from what ive read here alot use the rem coreloks,what other brands an weight work well.thanks kawie

Well he obviously likes it.  :) It's a present he will remember for the rest of his life. You are a good dad for getting your son an excellent gift like a rifle. And I might add, a perfect caliber for a first rifle. My first real deer rifle was a 30-30.

If it is exclusively going to be loaded for single-shot you can load the 30-30 in a wider range of bullet profiles than standard factory ammo comes in. Wander over to the handloading forum and do some reading, maybe even post some questions.

Great news. Makes me proud and I've never met neighter of ya. ;D Like kevin said you can load just about any .30 cal bullet you want in a handie but its hard to beat those corelocs for what they do. 8)

our kids are the future of our sport and pastime....if we don't pass this stuff on there won't be any shooting sports in the future. Go buy that kid some more ammo,Dad.

My ex girlfriend's 4 year old would go out into the garage with me and reload shot shells.  He wanted to reload 20 ga as he thought the smaller shells were for him.  And he was good at it.  I have been reolading shot shells since I was about 11.  My father never really wanted to know how.
But with the 30-30.  If it is the only 30-30 in the family he can load anything in it as far as projectiles.  If your ranges are close I would stay with either the 150 or 170 soft points.  but if you are looking at a 100 yard shot why not load a pointed bullet.  Any .308 bullet will work.  Heck load to the contender specs in the back of most reloading manuals.  That may be your best bet to get goos 125 grain bullets for deer and everything.
If you have a lever gun then stay with the soft points so rounds don't get mixed up at the range or hunting and a pointed round ends up in a tube mag and possibly have a disaster.

hey thanks guys,we went to the local wally world last night an he got me for another 2 boxes.which he shot 1 box up today after school again plus about 60 rounds of 22lr. ;D ;D we have one box of federals left.so far it seems to hit what we are aiming at,but realy havent checked it for accuracy yet,will waite till we put a few hundred rounds through it,then i will put a scope on it an see what it will do.this is the only 30-30 we have so we dont have to worry about mixing rounds up.so far this is the third handi in the house(50cal sidekick,12ga tracker,30-30)so hopefully i can find a 357mag for myself now so i can ream it to the max which i already have 100 pieces of rem brass just need the gun lol.thanks kawie

Great caliber for the boy. I loaded sierra 125's & hornady 130 pointies in my son's(avitar with 1st deer he was 9 131yr shot 125gr sierra using H4895, can't remember the load weight)

Can't go wrong he is shooting full 30-30 so reloading will be a breeze,

Happy Bday to the boy my son just turned 12, boy they grow up fast now he shoots a rem model 7 youth in 7-08 but he still has & says he will never sell the 30-30. I bet your boy does the same ;D

The 30-30 will handle everything in the lower 48 within it's range limits. Low recoil, good accuracy, and a plethra (I just like the word ) of .308 bullets to choose from.  I load everything in it from 150 to 180 grn in mine, and just love taking it to the range. The factory loads can be found everywhere,and are among the least expensive  ammo you can buy.I can't think of a single reason not to have one.
