Two ?'s Lapping and wich rings
« on: March 10, 2009, 12:01:15 PM »
Ok I have never heard of lapping scope rings before what is this just basically sanding them or something? Also I just bought a new Bushnell 5x15x50 MM Elite for my H&R .204 Ultra varmit. With a 50 mm bell will a standard high WARNE ring work or will I need to go extra high. I had to go with High for the .308 survivor so the hammer would clear. I wasn't worried about the bell on that one since it is a 3x9x40 (Elite).

You'd be well served to spend some more time in the FAQs and Help sticky in the H&R Centerfire rifle forum, you'll find all you need on scope mounting and rings there including detailed pics of ring lapping as well as tool sources and rings that don't require lapping, the link below is from the FAQs, there are several others on rings and mounts right next to it including how to easily work around the hammer issue and mount in low or extra low rings.  ;)

Many a good rifle shot bad because the scope isn't mounted correctly.  Midway and Brownells sell scope mounting kits for about $35.
Basicly it's two one inch steel bars and both come to a point.  Put one in each ring and when they meet your scope is aligned.  The other tool is a steel bar with short handles on it.  Put laping compound on the rings install the bar and turn it back and forth until the rings show even wear.  By doing this the scope will make firm even contact with the rings and won't get damaged by uneven tenison and is more apt not to shift under recoil.

Tim, I hate to stir the pot (by not reading the link to the sticky right now) but was wondering if you prefered the lapping verse a ring such as the Burris Zee ring?
There is many of satisfied customers with the Burris ring but the lapping sure sounds like a good way to get the inconsistancy's in the entire mount squared up.

I love Burris Signature Zee rings, but they aren't offered in low, so lapping it the alternative to use low rings, and it does work great, just requires some elbow grease. So far I've lapped Leupold Rifleman, Burris Zee and Weaver Grand Slams, the Grand Slams I won't use again, they required at least an hour of lapping to get decent contact, the others only take 10-15 minutes at most. I also tried to lap a set of Warne vertical split rings....once.  ::)

EDIT: I forgot about the Leupold PRW and QRWs that I've used, they lap fast too, slipping the ring caps on is kinda scary tho, but using a piece of paper on the scope tube protects it from scratches, then remove the paper after the cap is on the tube.
