Would you buy this gun?

I subscribe to a few gun "rags" and on occasion, I buy a few when I need some additional reading "stuff". Well, I picked up this publication from FMG and it contained this article http://fmgpublications.ipaperus.com/FMGPublications/GUNS/GUNS0409/?page=30 about a HI Point 45acp that retailed new, for $186.

Now.....the article stated it was essentially a "totally dependable" gun. Well, I guess we as a reader are suppose to "assume" that the writer shot a sufficient amount of ammo through this $189 gun to feel comfy enough to make this statement. However, the writer never stated how many rounds he shot through it.

For me, if I'm gonna carry a gun that I need for self defense, or one in the home for self defense, I don't think I want to rely on a $189 gun. But, maybe that's just me.

I wonder if FMG got some advertising dollars from someone for this?

Personally, I would put the $189 towards something of higher quality.

I will tell you right off I have not shot one.  A few friends at the range and a neighbor of mine have them in everything 380, 9, and 45.  They are one of the few good buys out there--they are ugly is the downside but they shoot very good groups and have not heard of a hiccup that could not be attributed to limb wrist.
I read a story last month about a guy who found one of the carbine rifles in 9 mm in a rental house that had been fired and ruined with handloads and the company fixed it for nothing more than shipping cost.  He even told them he suspected handloads caused the damage and he was not the original purchaser, the response was they replaced one that was in a house fire once.  This to was in one of the gun mags and I read so many I don't know which.  I am thinking of one of the carbines myself---check out the high point forum on here I think you will find happy shooters.

I'll tell you...I just found out that these guns are made right here in the USA. So, they are not a cheap foreign import. They are a true blue USA cheap product!! And...(and I'm not kidding) that's a relief.

Then I also found out...not only are they made here....but they are made in Dayton OH. And that's where my daughter lives!! So...anything that helps any local economy is a good thing.

I'm actually going to buy one of these this summer. Man....what a turnaround this post was.!!

I think all members here would say to run at lest 2 or 3 hundred rounds through any self-defence gun to make sure it runs.You could buy a Colt gold cup and have it jam-up out of the box.

i know several people who own hi-points,they are all in agreement ugly as sin but function without difficuly. i own one i have shot off and on for five years only trouble was a faulty mag. have hit sitting cottontails at up to 30 steps.i have owned 1911's ,no target models, but some have been colts and for a production gun i have no complaints other than i prefer a single action. makes an excellant carry gun in a vehicle,which is legal in my state and if stolen will not hurt the wallet near as bad. just my opinion.

if it was there rifle id say go for it. But id steer clear of there handguns.

why would you buy a hi point when you could buy something like cz82 or something. i know ammo might be an issue but quality and reliability have to play some part. any used revolver under 200 bucks would be a better choice. for a hundred bucks more you can buy a new revolver.

I don't own one and prolly never will but I know several people who do and none have ever failed to fire and are reasonably accurate.
They are uglier than a glock and feel worse in my hand but seem to work ok.

My concern isn't the manufacturer or price point.  I have a Bersa that it a great pistol in 380.  A blowback 45 is hard to design, and hard to control with different loads.  For instance, to design a blowback that won't slam the slide against the frame in a 45, you'll need a pretty hefty spring.  Shooting lighter loads with this design is likely more prone to feeding problems than a recoil operated design.

That said, for 185 bucks, who cares.

I would, however, not use a $185 pistol with a blowback design in a 45 for a self defense pistol.  Get a good, used revolver in 357 instead.
