Some hogs...finally!
« on: March 10, 2009, 05:39:27 PM »
Got to take my dad out hunting this past weekend.  So far this year, the hogs have been in hiding.  My wife is the only one to get one so far.  Well, we had much better luck.  We got these two in the first half-hour.  I got two more just before dark and wounded a 5th, but it was too dark for a chase.  The mottled one was shot with the Glock because I tracked it into the brush and came upon it about 15ft from me.

Congratulations on some porkers, now stop feeding my addiction. I need to get some of that,"Hog Wild" and head out. Weather forecast is a little damp in TN for the next week. I have a new 45-70 that needs blooding.

It's great to return the favor to old Dad isn't it?Have you stopped hunting them with the .223?That 55 grain Gameking you were using...was it the soft point or the hollow point?

It was the soft point and it still gets used all the time in my AR...actually that was what my dad was hunting with that day. I was using the wife's new gun just to get some more rounds through it.  I always carry some sort of sidearm as well, usually the Glock 22 in the picture.

Thanks for the bullet info.I'd called Sierra and the tech suggested the hollow point because it's a tougher bullet.Looking for a compromise that'll open a little on a turkey but not blow it up. These will replace those expensive 60 gr. Nosler partitions I'm running low on.Now only need to find the sierra in stock.

I'd shoot the partitions...if I had the money.  I've had real good luck with the soft points on both hogs and deer.  My only experience with the hollowpoint was the Federal Premiums that I had a box of.  I thought they had too much expansion for hogs.  The soft points don't always exit, but if hit in the heart, lungs, or neck, the pig will go down fast.  I would think they would work well for turkey too.

These won't be for pigs unless I happen to see one while hunting turkey or coyote or crow.As long as they don't expand much more than the partition I know they'll be good.Hopefully they'll be easier to find a good load for than the partition too.
