Is the 357 maxi worth doing?

I just bought a nef in 357 mag.  I am thinking of rechambering it to 357 maxi.  What i would know is if i ream the barrel what kind of accuracy can i expect with normal 357 mag?  I plan on useing the gun to shot coyote, ground hogs, and maybe deer if i get the chance.  Do to not haveing any maxi cases i would be shoting the mag case mostly.  I have the abilty to get a reamer and do the job.  I also plan on buying maxi case if the accuracy is there with the round?  thanks for you help Justin

Normally I would respond with a resounding YES. But the climate for this case is not good. I see a guy selling some in the classifieds and you may be able to find some somewhere. But with out cases its a tough call.

Now, if you could get your hands on a couple hundred virgin cases it would be a NO BRAINER IMHO.  ::) ;D

 I absolutely love mine and will not trade/sell it for the world. I still shoot 357 mags, but currently am looking for another barrel is straight 357 mag so I can have two guns set up the same at the same time.

I have thre .357 barrels one is maxed out the oyher two are factory all three will shoot inside of 2"s at 100 yards and will drop deer just fine I prefer 180 grain bullets in mine.  At 100 plus yards the max is the better round, Inside of a 75 yards I see no diffrence worth worrying about.  .38s at 50 yards or less are just too much fun to shoot I shoot alot of wadcutters and SWCs The max shoots them same as the mag.  The max handi is one of my favorite rifles ever.

As to the max being accurate, If I do my part my max will shoot inside of 1.25" at 100 yards and might do better than that with someone who knows how to shoot doing the shooting.

So is it worth it to ream a mag to max? If you reload and can get brass absolutly.  If not stick with a mag plenty good in its own right. 8)


BTW I have a problem with .357s.  I can't seem to get enuff of'em I have three .357 mag rifles, three .357 mag revolvers and want an auto loader just because, I have one .357 max rifle and two .357 max revolvers, and one .35 rem lever gun.  I hope to have a .35 rem and a .35 whelan handi rifles soon and a .358X39 which is a 7.62x39 punched out to .357.  See I got a problem.  :o::) ;D

I just found some brass for the maxi.  25.99 for 100 brad new stuff.  I have a question the gun i bought was an all blake new england brand new.  The Letters on the frame are NV which is new england 2008.  With that being said is this frame able to be rechambered

NV = 2005 which would be an SB2 frame if it was factory fitted then, and yes it would be good for rechambering to Max. Where'd ya find the brass?

 Its my opinion that yes it is perfectly safe as originally this was made and fit to a "shotgun" case hardened receiver with a rifle firing pin. (Same as the curent SB1) Its of a small enough head that even though its a higher pressure round, its back thrust is minimal.

Order a couple hundred and rent the reamer!!!

 I am curious as well. Where did you find the brass?

A gun shop in My town Had ordered some for a guy that never returned to get them.  I was wrong the the last letter it is a Y not a V.  So is the the SB2 frame that i found?

 Based on the FAQ's its a 2008 model and that makes it a SB1.

 Like I said, I still feel you will be just fine with the rechambering to maxi.

Found More Brass today and a pawn/gun Shop the guy had them in the bake and said no one ever asked for the brass.  He also had the Factory Rem 357 Max ammo (9) boxs of that stuff. I think i might be a little hi at 40 dollars a box but i got all the brass (176) pieces of the stuff New might i add for 40 bucks!

Better look again they have been out of stock for quite some time now. The expected in-stock date is 3/15/09.

Yes ......i did.  I have a gun smith friend that had the reamer and I have already reamed it.  Just need to go Shoot.  I also thought Midway might have it but after seeing it was out of stock I wasn't going to wait on them to get it in.

ANOTHER MAXI brother enters the fold!!  WELCOME!!!  ::) ;D :D :D :D

 I just came across some 110HP's. I haven't tried really lite bullets in the maxi. If they shoot well, they auto really expand at the maxi attainable velocities!  For me the 180s have proven the best weight. I do have some of the new 200FTX Hornady's loaded up ready for the range. So time will tell if these prove to be as accurate.
