ebony grips
« on: March 11, 2009, 03:39:16 PM »
I bought my first colt saa.

The gun is great but it has plastic grips. Yuck, so........

I cut wedges and rough cut shape in ebony.

Rasped and sanded to shape, then fit to frame.

Cut block for inside grip, drilled for dowels and split, then glued to back of grip panel.

So far so good.

I did the other half tonight. It's looking pretty good if I do say so myself.  I picked up some abalone and am going to try my hand at inlaying. Then I can give it a nice oil finish.

Looks great. Just go slow with the inlaying.  You can always take more off, but putting it on is a little tougher.

Care to do my 29N with some purple heart grips?  Always thought that would look good.

Looking good so far!
Make sure you post pics of the inlay progress.

I used some purple heart on a grip for my srh. I was surprised, it turned brown when you cut it but after exposure to the air it went purple again.

That's the stuff!

Brown when you cut or rout.  Wood oxidizes purple over time.  If you let it set, than hit it with some 600gr just to smooth the pores.  Then let it set again before finishing.

I've tore up router bits and saw blades trying to work it.  Very tough.

They use it for bridge piers in South and Central America.

Grips look good.
