winchester powders?
« on: March 12, 2009, 07:56:25 AM »
my local range has winchester powders/primers for sale.
are they decent quality?

my hornady #7 manual shows win748 for .204 ruger, but i cant find a 45/70 load using winchester powder in either the hornady #7 or Lyman #49.

does anybody know any loads using win powder for the 45/70?

Qality is very good. As for the 45-70 loadings why not call Winchester and ask them. Your problem is there are OLD trapdoor 45-70, newer lever action guns and even a few contenders around. I have a BOLT actioned 45-70. All of these have a different PRESSURE limit. The 45-70 case was designed for black powder and MAY have to much room for safe use of any WW powders. They will know if this is true. They also may have some info that isn't universally known!

Winchester powders and primers are good-quality items.  I use 748 in my .223 regularly.  As for 748 in a .45-70, Winchester (now marketed by Hodgdon, but still made in the same plant in the USA as it's always been) does not list a load for 748 in .45-70 at all.  You can find their loading data at no charge online at www.wwpowder.com

I don't recall whether I have ever tried 748 in .45-70.  For that cartridge, I normally used IMR 4198 and Vihta Vuori N133.  Both of those are similar in general burn rate to 748, but they're not the same so don't try to use load data for one with the other.

Winchester has a burn rate similar to H335 and VARGET.  However, there has never really been many loads developed for the 45-70 with Winchester powders.  Joe D'Alessandro at realguns.com used to list some 45-70 loads with Winchester 748 but has subsequently replaced them with Reloder 10x and Ramshot X-Terminator loads.  You could try emailing him.

they have a variety of winchester powder, so i dont need the 45/70 loads to be for 748.
ill check out winchester too.
winchester only shows imr and hodgdon powder for 54/70 loads.

best manual to pick up if you want winchester data is the hogdon manual. Winchester powders are made by hogdon.

Thats a GOOD DEAL!!!!

around Christmas time I ran out of 748 and I had a bunch of 30-30's to put together... I went everywhere available to me, no one had it. About two weeks later after many promises of "its coming in". A local shop got some 1lbs in. I bought one to tide me over. $28bucks a pound!!!  WOW, now recently I have seen it for 22-24 that's more status quo. So your $10 a pound is AWESOME!!!  GOOD job there!!!

Re Reply # 5.
The Speer #13 manual still lists the same load info for W-748 and their 400 gr. FN.
