Seriously, there's a moral issue here that can't be ignored. Is a society that would hunt another human down to eat them worth preserving? If you're already contemplating a particular type of folk to hunt ... What is stopping you now and how are you better than them?

Dying of hunger is about as bad as it gets; I've been around it in East Africa. But they have a sense of right and wrong ... Rather die right than live wrong.

I understand your viewpoints TM and also believe there is a real moral issue at hand. I'm just not sure whether morals would play as much of a role when folks get to the point of kill and eat, or die. As far as whether or not a society that would hunt another human down to eat them being worth preserving, I'm not sure. I know I wouldn't really care to live in a world like that. I was just kidding about Billy hunting down liberals, but was serious about us acting like predators, especially when feeding our families is involved like Bob mentioned. None of us have ever been in this situation, so it's pretty hard to really know what we'd do.

When society fails and we are reduced to the primal predator mode, instinct will take over.  We will do what we need to do to survive.  Those that don't will be removed from the gene pool.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'm sure cannibalism would happen, probably only on a very limited scale.  Everyone reading this has put a little thought into it.  As far as moral dilemmas go, the idea of eating anoher human doesn't appeal to me, which is why I have lots of food and seeds on my shelves, and the ground to plant them on.  Morally even the Catholic church agrees that there is nothing wrong with eating human flesh, as long as you didn't kill the main course.  As far as murdering someone for food being wrong, I think it is a moral abomination.  However I would kill someone who is raiding my crops, essentially starving me, without a second thought.  I believe attrition would destroy most of the population within a year to 18 months in this country and that that time frame will be the hardest for the survivors.

I think I would just travel the rivers and waterways digging up worms and collecting insects to catch fish and eat those instead. Probably eat the insects, too. I would keep a list of different forbes, and learn the knowledge to identify those. Animals don't necessarily eat one anthor that live in the wild. And it would be sad that a rabbit is better at surviving than humans could be.

That's big talk, and it sounds like the right thing to do.  But if you're wasting away, and your family is weak and dying, could you hold to it?  I know that I'm capable of horrifying barbarism.  I'd do anything for my family.

Really I don't think anyone here can truly say what hunger could make them do. Folks in 3rd world countries eat dogs, rats, insects, worms......  Humans have an amazing will to live.

I feel that we'd resort to cannibalism if we were hungry enough. We'd probably start by simply eating the dead that had died naturally. Then, when demand exceeded supply, we'd probably be just like any other predator. Some folks like say, Billy_56081 ;), might even organize hunting parties that search out, destroy, and bring back as camp meat, the former liberals that crossed us when we still had a partial republic of a Country. ;D

Edit: removed the word "to" from last sentence of post.

Well I'm figuring the liberal scum would be more tender being they are generally younger and rarely work in jobs which would cause them to strain their muscles therefore toughen their meat.  ;)

But in a realistic way, killing them not only for food, but to eliminate them as a competator for your resources would also be an important issue. Much of tribal warfare of the past was caused by one grou encroaching on anothers resources. I would guess in an EOTWAWKI situation the canibalism would be limited to a time until the population was brought down to where it did not exceed the natural carrying capacity of the land.

I would be worried about what diseases they might be carrying. I'll limit myself to conservative cuisine! ;D

I know I'm always pushing it, but if you have not read The Road by Cormac Mccarthy, its a great book that touches on this subject.

if reduced to eating others , the world as we know it will be over anyway . Some will die rather than eat others , maybe commit suicide long before they reach that point. others will be reduced mentaly to the point of doing what is needed to live . Still others will just die as they will not be motivated to live . It would seem mankind has faced this challenge before . Like all unpleasnt task some will get it done others die.
The idea of making up ones mind in advance is what bothers some . To others its just facing facts .

It would probably end up like the scene from Blazing Saddles where the boys are all gathered around the camp fire eating beans. :D

what  is EOTWAWKI  ???

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane and Lenny Bruce is not afraid.
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, dummy serve your own needs.
Feed it off an aux speak, grunt, no, strength, Ladder start to clatter with fear fight down height.
Wire in a fire, representing seven games, a government for hire and a combat site.
Left of west and coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.

Team by team reporters baffled, trumped, tethered cropped.
Look at that low playing! Fine, then.
Uh oh, overflow, population, common food, but it'll do.
Save yourself, serve yourself.
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed dummy with the rapture and the revered and the right, right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

Six o'clock - TV hour. Don't get caught in foreign towers.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Locking in, uniforming, book burning, blood letting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate.
Light a candle, light a votive. Step down, step down.
Watch your heel crush, crushed, uh-oh, this means no fear cavalier.
Renegade steer clear!
A tournament, tournament, a tournament of lies.
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

The other night I dreamt of knives, continental drift divide.
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein. Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs.
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom!
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam book neck, right? Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it. can't I have some time alone?
It's the end of the world as we know it can't I have some time alone? and I feel fine...fine...

I know you don't mean anything sarcastic by calling it "big talk." It is big talk, isn't it? Anything worth dying for is. Family is big talk; the 2nd amendment is big talk. I will do almost anything for my family, and almost anything for my country. The best thing I can do for either one is to stand for what's right. Last thing I want my son to learn from me is that there's no such thing as right and wrong - just kill or be killed.

I think in order to calm the queasy stomachs, you should skin and bone out the meat, before you bring it back to camp...!
