Price Check Ruger #1 in .357 mag
« on: March 13, 2009, 08:46:19 AM »

I didn't even know ruger chambered this cal., but apparently they did.  Does this have any collectors value?  Or are we looking at an oddball that makes folks scratch their heads in amusement?

Do you mean 375?
I think they did make some of the No.3's in 375 Win as well as the 375H&H No 1H model.
They may have made a few of them in 357mag.  Especally in the No. 3 it would be a neat little round.
Ruger also sells actions and someone may have built them selves one.

I saw one at a gun show and wondered the same thing, if it was worth something.  It was made in .357 mag and the one I saw I believe was in the 700-800 range.

In answer to the original questions: yes and yes.
Around 1500 made for the Cal. Highway Patrol Assoc. as a special commemorative aorund 1983-4. These have the CHP logo on the receiver and are worth less than the 300? or so unmarked overrun guns that are not marked with the logo.
If NIB, $700-800 is an excellent price for either, but especailly for an unmarked gun. There are Ruger #1 collectors out there looking for these, but even some #1 fans don't see the reason for their existence.
I've had a lot of careful fun with mine over the years and it's still ANIB.

Thanks for the feedback folks.  There are some real ruger guru's on this forum.  This gun is a consignment at a local store, and I didn't see anything that looked like a CHP commemorative.

I didn't even ask the price, as like tn_junk, Im not a collector so would probably rechamber or rebarrel to something else.  That would be an expense that I can't afford.

Thanks folks!

I found myself in the local gun shop again and decided to check on the price tag for the .357 mag #1.  It was a consignment that had just sold for $625.  Not a bad price for a like new Ruger...just a strange caliber for a single shot rifle.

You are so right!  :D  The 357 Mag is probably the most popular Handi barrel ordered, so it is not a strange caliber for a single shot rifle, it is a strange caliber for a Ruger #1.

By the way I love my NEF Survivor Handi 357.

Actually, though they were never cataloged, Ruger did sell barreled actions only. I'm not sure if they still do though. Check Brownell's since they  usually have both the No.1's, and the MKII / Hawkeye's. Naturally they have to be ordered though an FFL.

Edit: Hmm, I just looked, and don't see them anymore at Brownell's.

Yes, Ruger did sell # 1 barreled actions up into the1980's, and they were a cataloged item at a listed price of about $ 285.

But just to keep the record straight they never sold Barrels or Actions separately.
