FORD F-650
« on: March 14, 2009, 03:22:24 AM »
I tried posting the link without success. I am sure a smarter person than I can do it.

Do a simple search "ford f-650"---be sure too read the options. It is a wild trip.
I want one before they run out.

You better get one before BHO bans them, no one needs an F650. Just a little sensable truck control.  ;)

William,

The F650 makes a pretty darn good base for a Hot Shot rig for hauling air loads. You going to become a trucker?

I was thinking it would make a good wildland attack rig with pump, tank, crewcab, and equipment compartments.

I looked at them big ol thangs, my heart started beating harder, I was dribbling slobber from the corners of my mouth, I had seizures in strange parts of my body, My eyes glazed over.
I have gotten over it now----well, maybe?
I really did not realize they made such large frames and motors. I was pretty amazed and shocked.
Some of them did look neat and, really, I can imagin a need for them in a lot of instances.
I still think I want one.  ;) :-*

I looked at an F-450 a couple of weeeks ago, the dealer sure tried to make a deal.  If it had been available with the Cummings or Cat I may have got real serious about trading the ole F-250 for a better tow truck.  I am running a 03 F-250 Crew Cab FX4 and tow a 36 foot all fiberglass Montana 5th wheel, she does ok in the towing department, but I would like the bigger truck to provide better braking.  I worry every time we travel through the Rockies, and keep my eye peeled for the run-a-way truck lanes just in case.

You sure see a lot of F-550s out on the road with travel trailers behind them, I'd bet there will be a few of the 650s out there too.  I guess you can justify the Ford, Freightliner or one of the other large tow vehicles  if you travel full time.

I sell slivestock & flatbed trailers for a living and I can tell you this is a useless truck for towing a gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer as long as the bed is on it.
Now put a flatbed on and it might work.
Still pretty tall.
Look at the pic from Dale.
The thing is so tall there is no way a trailer will hook up to it.
They don't even make a slide in hitch that will come down far enough to pull a tag-along bumper trailer level!
GM tried this a few years ago and it was a big flop.
The same will happen to Ford.

There is a guy down the road from me who just bought one and he is sick of it.
He said you can't see out of the thing, it don't turn worth a hoot, it's so tall his 38' camper won't even begin to crank up high enough to clear the tail gate.
He said even if it did the front axle of the trailer would be off the ground.
Then he said, "don't even think of trying to put it in a parking space at WALLY-WORLD"!

"He says he wished he had bought the low-profile FREIGHTLINER with a sleeper.
It even cost less than the 650".
What a very expensive play toy.

It is pretty!

But Tom, those pics that Dale provided are extreme cases of the F650. Look at the picture below. You could pull livestock trailers, light flatbeds, with any hitch configuration. Heck, you could pull your motor boat or snowmobile trailer with the low profile model F650 like in the picture below.

But all in all, I agree with your friend. I'd take the Freightliner M2 over the Ford any day of the week.

I stand corrected.
I didn't know it was offered in a low-pro version.
All I have seen so far have had the bigger tires & wheels.
Not as big as in Dales pics but bigger than the ones on the low-pro.
Thanks for the info.

I'm probably one of the few people that could really use the ones Dale showed.  Big wheels and jacked up high is the way I like to go.  I am always crossing rivers and creeks where the water and mud gets deep. And the trails are rough with washouts and ditches across them.  That is the reason for doing the lift thing, with the big wheels.   My current F-350 Supercab Dully is not high enough and I am always dragging the center of the frame.

I like the fuel capacity. Course it would probably take that much to cross over Houston.
I am still in awe. Thanks for the other post of different ones.
I want one of each.
Check out the prices and options.
