this is not new. they also stopped surplus powder sales. all the bad stuff that they used to pull down and resale is now destroyed brass/powder /primers and bullets.they said the reason was that some of it got out of the US into the wrong hands. i do believe a company called tallon was the one they blamed. so now we all pay. tax dollars at work
never to much gun

I don't know where I have been all these years but I didn't know that government brass was sold off till now.  I'm sure that many in the current administration also feel that "the wrong hands" are our hands, being the .223 and .308 can be fired in those "assault rifles".  Reminds me of agencies that destroy confiscated firearms (including valuable single action revolvers, double barrel shotguns, etc.) instead of auctioning them off to the public (and reducing the cost of government), so that they are kept "off the street".
I can remember when being a good rifleman was an honored tradition in this country, and encouraged.  It wasn't that long ago either.  Sad.

Now, the National Park Service has banned lead ammo in National Parks:

It's going to be a long two years.

I recently had an opportunity to buy a 55 gallon drum of .223 brass that came either from Ft. Hood or Lackland AFB.  The party was asking $950. for the full drum with pickup in San Antonio. I guess i should have taken it.

When my son when through basic at Lackland, their entire rifle training consisted of
30 rounds at 50 yards. He never saw a rifle again. Pretty sad case of marksmanship
training, if you ask me. Sure, he was a wrench on KC-135's, but you never know
where you might end up deployed.

tapwater,

I don't know when your son went through basic, but currently the training course including qualification is a total of 80 rounds.  Breaks down into 16 rounds to get zeroed in, 24 rounds of practice, and 40 rounds for qualification. Ranges are 75, 175, and 300 meters (simulated by using scaled down targets on a 25 yard range).

Granted, that doesn't sound like a lot but if you don't qualify, you'll end up firing whatever it takes you to get good enough to qualify, and if you do qualify, you don't need to fire more, right?

The base I worked at prior to retiring a little over two years ago is qualifing with rubber bullets on a 25 yard range.  Recently I was talking to a young C-130 maintainer who was about to be shipped to the war zone, he didn't even know what an M-16 looked like, said he had never fired any type of "gun" during his time in the AF.  Hard to believe, but knowing him as I do I have to take his word for it.

Sounds like the Air Force is trying hard not to create any new shooters, you wouldn't want anyone to pick up that nasty habit.   You do know the difference between the Air Force and the Boy Scouts  -----  The boy scouts have adult leadership.

Guess we're veering off topic here. My son did basic at Lackland summer of '04. He'd practiced
stripping my AR at home to give him a headstart. His class never stripped or cleaned a
weapon.
My original point was that given that level of training, they wouldn't produce much empty brass.

The Air Force, the only branch of the service where the enlisted troops stay home and send the officers out to fight.

At least that is what the army guys and Senior AF NCOs always told me.

In my twenty years of the Air Force I had M-16 training six times.  Four of those times we used the .22RF adapters and shot inside at 25 yards, at a small target.  I trained with the M-60 twice, and the .38 four times.

Now I drive by Ft Wainwrights shooting ranges everyday, and they are always shooting out there.  Those boys sure are producing a lot of expended brass.  We constantly hear the little pop, pop, pop, of the M-4s and other small bores, out at the borough shooting range.  When they fire up Big Mo, everyone stops and listens for a moment.  We hear that over our own shooting.  That thing sounds like one bad MaMa.

So while the AF might not produce much, the Army more than makes up for it.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Apparently, the DOD changed their minds and the brass will still be sold.

just a couple of days ago they got nudged by several politicians from the Dakotas and Montana.
many police agencies buy ammo from the companies that reload this brass. Their ammo supply was
about to cease to exist.
