I was hiking with a friend in the Olympic Mountains of Washington State a few years ago and we had hiked to an old copper mine. We then decided to hike up a very steep side trail that went to a couple of old log cabins, or rather what was left of them. We had to stop repeatedly to catch our breath and during one of our stops I happened to stop right between two very large boulders and noticed something down the hill about 25 yards away that didn't look "quite right". If I had been 1 or 2 steps either direction I never would have seen this. My hiking partner was standing right next to me couldn't see it at all. Turned out to be an antique crock pot and an old style canning jar full of beans. This was the type of canning jar that used a glass lid with a wire fastener. Crock pot was empty but the jar was still sealed, or at least I thought it was until I smelled this incredably awful smell in my truck on the return home. Near as we could figure these beans were canned sometime in the 20's so you can imagine what this smelled like. On the plus side, my wife still uses the crock pot for decoration around the house...Gary D.
