Welcome!  Read the sticky on sights near the top of this list. Triggers may be a bit heavy, but not always, they can be lightened with info from the FAQs and Help sticky, check it out.  I have a Sportster Youth, but haven't shot it yet, it's for the grand kids some day.  ;)

I have one, and am quite happy with the iron sights. The mod I did to mine was to paint the front sight bright red to make it more visible when hunting. Besides that the gun shoots exactly where it's aimed, everytime. Now if the guy behind mine to learn to aim it better.....
A Maritimer & Damn Proud of it.

I just got a .22 sportster youth to teach my nephew.  I think this is the same as a normal sportster except the stock is shorter.

The sightline is very low.  I can not get my face down far enough to see the sights.  I swapped a lower comb stock on it and now it is OK(except much longer).  It might be OK as originally issued for small kids because their faces and cheek bones are smaller.  Problem is you will never know because they won't be able to explain it to you.

The fixed sights are very low which is great in a field model .22 as long as you can get your face low enough to see them.  you will not be able to swap the rear sight to a WGRS peep because the front sight is too low and it is a fixed blade(no interchangeable inserts).  The WGRS mounts on the much thicker rear part of the barrel which puts the sight way up higher than the original leaf rear sight.  Maybe you can get a higher sight from the factory and then you can use the WGRS.

So far the rifle shoots and works great.  CB Longs work good and are very quiet.

my standard sportster(adult size) needed an overall height of .680 to make the elevation right...with that front sight my wgrs peep is in the middle of it's elevation range at 50 yds

Very nice. The front sight, what model Remington is that from. Do you have the part number for it? Did the screw hole line up or did you drill and tap?  I have tha same stock on my 20 gauge and will be swapping them.

Again, Thanks and nice job, this is how I want to set my Sportster up.

i was posting for info in these forums about iron sights a while back and a member pm'ed me...said he had 150 lbs or so of iron sights and he set me up with the ramp and sight insert for about 20 bucks. I'll try to get you some info. My sportster(new) came with a very small front sight hole...#3 or #4 screw and the ramp took a #6 or #8 so i installed the ramp to the barrel with JB Kwik...no screw..i have tried a couple different front inserts, tapped em back and forth as needed and that ramp is solid(remember it's only 22lr)...the important things about the ramp are that the bottom is contoured to match the barrel pretty close and that standard dovetail sight inserts fit the ramp. I'm gonna leave my ramp like it is(glued on) just to see how long it'll last. It might just outlast me......

See the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs, Williams makes ramps and inserts in many sizes to accomodate any need, those I've used come with a 6-48 screw, but I've used them with the 3-48 screw that comes on a lot of H&R barrels too. There's also a sight height calculator link.  ;)
