270 Win
« on: March 15, 2009, 10:57:46 AM »
This might be the right place to talk about building a 270 Win and 270WSM..  does anyone want to ask me a question as to barrel length, twist, grooves, throating etc and what action I used and I'll be very happy to answer any question.  I will be very glad to give loading data and velocity in my rifles.

OK roper, please give us the whole shebang on the Custom 270 Win. I'm not much interested in the WSM, but others might be. After hearing about the rifle and possibly seeing some pictures, it might be easier to come up with some questions.

Twenty years ago I built a custom rifle.  Analyzed everything.  Decided on 280AI.  It was going to be the ultimate rifle.  Spent a fortune on it.  Truly a collection of the finest components available.  Darn thing is too heavy, too long, over scoped, and has been a safe queen for the last ten years.  Too much analysis!  Too many magazines!  Too many loading manuals!

Interesting perspective Charles. I'd like to hear the full specs on that rifle too. Do you think you would have been happier just finding a factory rifle in .280 and then you or a smith chamber it to AI?

My wife does the picutres and she out of town.  Was a good article in handloader Apr-May 2006 about a light weigth 270 with a 22' barrel from Lilja with High Tech stock total rifle with scope weight 7lb 10oz build by Sisk rifles.  One thing that was impressive was the velocity from that 22" barrel 130gr bullets @ 3181fps,140gr @ 3017fps and 150gr @ 2988fps.  I have to admit I'll talk to the barrel guys as to what might be the best twist with the bullets I want to use and then I spend some time with the gunsmith on throating and I'll make up a bunch of dummy rounds every thing is set to the OAL of the bullet ogive.  Wyatt makes extended magazine box that will allow for a long seating of the bullets so don't need to worry about overall cartridge length.  I do like a bullet with a long bearing surface like the 140gr TSX and Hornady 140gr.  I've had real good luck with Lilja 3 groove 30 cal barrels and Hart barrels among others.  Standard twist for the 270 is 1/10 since I really don't have a desire to shoot light bullets a 9.5 twist would be nice might add alittle velocity.  Use a manson chamber reamer and separte throating reamer barrel finish out a 24" long # 3 contour and I like to use only 1.5" of the chamber part of the barrel I like more of the taper part for the bullets.  Of course the action get blueprinted ,stock is bedded, trigger job.

Barnes has loading data for their 140gr TSX max of 54gr/H-4350 and Hornady has a max of 53.1gr/H-4350 with their 140gr bullet  the 54gr/H-4350 with 140gr TSX @3172fps with 53gr/H-4350 and 140gr Hornady @3047fps.  I worked all those loads up to a max and like I say it's not in the barrel length the two inch longer may account of the increase over what Sisk load for his 140gr bullets he used Honadys SST/Nosler Accubond.

I just happen to hit it right with the TSX and I think some of it is the twist/throating.  Sisk had a load of  58gr/H-4831 with 150gr partition @ 2941fps I used 55gr/H-4831 for 2940fps and he had one load with 150gr bullet out of that 22" barrel @ 2988fps.  There is no down side to any of it if I didn't get any gain  so what.  Still have a good shooting rifle and maybe rebarrel it to something else who knows.  I didn't run a bunch of reloads testing every powder or bullets.

Just to set the record straight I'll answer any question but I won't answer any question that is cherry pick to make someone look like their some kind of expert in their own mind.  When they don't get what they like then it starts with the name calling or insulting me and I think this site is better than that.  So this is my last post here bye

I built my 280AI on a Rem 700 action.  Blueprinted.  Lapped bolt.  Shillen SS match barrel 26" long.  Fiberglass stock from HS Precision.  Leupold LPS 4.5X14.  Was a total mistake.  Rather have a standard 700 of which I have several with wood, fiberglass, blue or stainless, etc.  Trigger is stock but set up oh so sweet.

The rifle shoots good but is not exceptional.  Too long and too heavy and way too expensive.  Just as soon have the VXIII as the 30mm LPS.

As for the AI, well dies cost more and the deer or targets never know the difference.  Until Nosler made brass, everything has to be formed.

I suppose if a rifle doesn't work out for the owner/shooter then, yes, a mistake. But it sure sounds like a great rifle. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, Charles.

I guess the rifle is a great rifle, just not something I enjoy taking afield anymore.  It is my "beanfield" rifle.  I may use it this year on a new lease we have.  One thing positive about the rifle is that it cleans up really well.  Not hard to remove the copper from the barrel.
