Buffalo Classic
« on: March 15, 2009, 12:37:17 PM »
I just purchased a new H@R Buffalo Classic in 45/70, I believe in completely cleaning a bore before load developing.  I cleaned it with shooters choice and then lapped it 10 strokes with Flitz and cleaned it again with shooters choice, my concern is when I push a tight patch from the breech to the bore there is a spot about 8 inches long right before the muzzle that I can feel the patch loosen up a little, if it was tighter at the muzzle I wouldn't mind.  Would I be better off shooting lasercast bullets or jacketed with this situation, I am looking for accuracy out to 500 yards.  Or should I just send it back to H@R

IMO you are getting the horse before the cart. Go shoot the thing first and try a couple of different loads. Ya don't know till ya try.

Slug the bore near the throat and near the muzzle, then you'll know for sure, choose a bullet sized appropriately and go shoot it.  ;)

Do I size the bullet for the small breech end or the larger muzzle end?  I imagine the breech end is going to squeeze the bullet down and it would be loose at the muzzle.

Size them .001"-.002" larger than the big end, every H&R that I've slugged has been .0005" larger at the muzzle, it's due to the way they may them, bored and rifled before they turn the barrel to size. They still shoot good as long as it's not too big a difference. I have five H&R 45-70s, two of them are BCs, they all shoot extremely well.  ;)

Everything Tim has ever told me about a BC has been dead on.  I have followed his advice to the letter on setting up and loading for my BC (got it in July) and it now hangs with the local Shiloh Sharps at the range.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
