Opinions Of This Gun Please
« on: March 15, 2009, 02:52:17 PM »
I am looking at a used Remington 870 SPS Super Max Gobbler. That is the one that came out a few years ago with the Knoxx SpecOps pistol grip stock. Does anybody have an opinion on this gun. Good, bad, hate it, love it, all comments welcome. Thanks for any replies.

I use and 870 for my turkey gun.  It's a step up from the Wichester and Mossberg pumps.  It's a step down from the browning pump.  I'd say it's about a wash with the Nova.  It's balanced poorly, not particularly well made, and kicks like you wouldn't believe.  I periodically threaten to sell my 870 and buy a BPS but I keep hoping that BPS figures out how to cut the extra weight from their turkey special.  A light turkey gun is important.

The pistol grip is entirely designed for marketing to people who don't know any better.

I would LOVE to buy the Browning BPS 3" turkey gun.  But a short-barreled pump that weighs 8 lbs is ridiculous.  Other than weight, it's perfect.  But weight is a major factor for me.  And it just weighs too much.

when properly mounted the pistol grip will help take some of the recoil and if a bird slips up of your "weak side" it can also aid in shooting with the off hand.  the latest camo and big scopes are for people you dont know any better

If it's a Remington 870 it's a good choice. IMHO

;) While my BPS is a nice gun, I would take an 870 10 to 1 over the browning. If you ever have a jam in the bottom eject gun, it is a real bast.... to clear. I had a couple with Ithaca model 37's. I loved those light pumps, but a couple jams and it went down the road. I have seldom had my 870 jam, if I do it is my fault, but it is easy to clear. So far I own or have owned most of the pumps on the market. The one left out is the Rem. model 31. I hope to pick it up some day.

I have an 870 and a BPS here.  Please explain a difficult to extract jam in a BPS and an easy to extract jam in an 870?  The only jam I'm aware of in a BPS is what you get when you double shuck it.  That is resolved by taking one finger and pushing the new shell up into the magazine.  If it takes you more than 2 seconds you're an idiot.  It is entirely user faulted, like most any pump jam.

Now in the heat of an active hunt (or when your fingers are frozen) and you don't push a new shell into the magazine of an 870 "until it clicks" what happens?  It's time to get a knife out, and it will not be resolved quickly.

I'll get both guns out and take pictures if it makes you feel better, but I simply can't see any truth in your comment regarding 870s and BPS.  And this comes from a guy who uses an 870 to turkey hunt.

The latest camo, ALL scopes (for shotgun turkey hunting), and pistol grips.  I agree.

;)dukkiller, well, I am not an idot, and I was probably hunting and shooting when you were still in diapers,  8) I have never failed to completely put the shells in my 870's, except when dealing with one in a .410. Now for your information the 37 that gave me so much grief would fail to extract the shell much beyond the brass. It didn't do this with all brands, just a few, but when it happened it was very difficult to get the jam cleared. Usually several minutes to maybe 5. It was a real hassel. When the forks had a shell in them and the empty did not clear the action.  8)

1) I didn't call you an idiot, but I stand by my statement about the intelligence of someone who can't clear a double-shuck jam in a BPS.

2) You stated, "I would take an 870 10 to 1 over the browning. If you ever have a jam in the bottom eject gun, it is a real bast.... to clear."  Then you apparently applied your bad experiences with a 37 (a gun I have limited but bad experiences with) onto a BPS.  Your statement should have read, "I would take an 870 10 to 1 over an ithica."  Then it would have matched the reality of the experience you went on to explain, and also would have more closely matched reality.  I also would have agreed with that statement.

3) I've never seen a significant 870 jam other than the failure to load kind.

4) Brass expansion (from cheap shells) can be a problem with any tight chamber.  I've seen this problem most often in a 1200 but it could happen with any gun.

My oldest son got one last spring. I too at first thought it was a bit outlandish. Watched him take a nice tom and a big yote with it........shot it myself a few times even. Nice gun....ain't what I would pick for myself, but all in all a nice gun. Really tames the recoil of the 3 1/2 inchers. I myself have an 870 wingmaster, a 870 supermag and a old mossy 500. When it comes to turkeys, I always reach for the mossy, cause it ain't never failed me and it shoots where it's pointed. IMHO, when it comes to turkeys, the brand of gun and the brand of ammo in it are irrelevant as long as you know where they shoot. 90% of the birds I have killed in the last 30 years could have been killed with a 410 single shot loaded with #6s.

"where'd you get the gun....son?"

nothing wrong with mossberg 835.  really good guns.  cheaper, and good shooting.  last forever if taken care of.  just make sure you get the ported barrel, or your shoulder wont like you any more.
