Which is better, joined or open barrels?
« on: March 16, 2009, 12:02:11 AM »
Does anyone have any info or opinions regarding combo guns having open or joined barrels?  My recently purchased IZH-94 Sever 22 mag/20 gauge has joined barrels, which I have found is somewhat rare.  It appears most Baikals and Savage 24's have open barrels.

All of the Savage 24V's(centerfires) from their inception in 1967 till production of the gun ceased, had seperated barrels, however, all the rimfire 24's, from 1939 till 1971 had joined barrels. The monolithic block literally ran the whole length of the barrel assembly, with the rimfire barrel brazed or soldered to the shotgun barrel the entire length. My guess is this style barrel ceased in 1971 as it became cost prohibitive. Most people who have a 24 with the joined barrels will tend to say the gun is extrememly accurate, the barrel being much stiffer and less vibration prone due to being brazed to the shotgun barrel being the reason. I have 24's with joined and seperated barrels, I personally feel that the barrels that are joined are more accurate also.

I've seen combo guns shoot good both ways....  When it comes to repeat shots, i'll give the edge to seperated bbls., but that's not cast in stone either...

I've seen a huge amounts of complaints about Savage groups "climbing", as the bbl warms, so???

Here's how my Valmet (with seperated bbls) shoots, and i didn't let the bbl cool between shots...

Wink man, I guess I was wrong about Savage 24 rimfires having separated barrels.  I may have been fooled by pictures of 24's for sale on the net.  Anyway, it is good to hear that having joined barrels is not a bad thing.

That's some shootin there DM! ;D

That is a great question I tend to think that the larger calibers tend to perform better with the open barrels.  But that is just my opinion.

Drillingman That is a nice group at 100 yards.  What position were you shooting from?  What shot was fromthe cold bore?

Off the bench, cold bore and then 5 shots as stated on the target.  I'd bet (from memory) one of the 3, is the first shot...

How do you like this one from my 8x57jrs drilling??  Same thing, off the bench, cold bore...

My current, recent trade, Savage 24J-DL, in .22mag./20 ga., shot a 315/16" group at 75 yd. when I sighted it in.  The barrels are joined.  This is the best shooting rimfire 24 that I have had.  The disadvantage of the joined barrels is that they cannot be regulated if they don't shoot together, this one does.

I have a 24F in .30-30/12 ga. (separated barrels) that shoots just over 1" @ 100 yd. when I do my part with the right load.  The 12 ga. barrel shoots a bit to the right.

If I remember correctly, the Valmets can be easily regulated.

The Valmets have windage and elevation adjustments

15 years ago, I bought a little Savage 24D 20Ga/.22WM combo with open (separate) barrels. It was a nice little gun, but the hits were abolutely unpredicatable.

I sighted it in the same day as I bought, and shot a fox with the rifle barrel in the evening. When I a week later shot at a crow, I didn't hit it at all. Back at the hut, I took a target paper, put it at 50 yards and fired a control shot. I missed the back spot with almost a foot.

At home I examined the gun cautiously, and found that the barrels could move in the muzzle joint. It was enough to grasp the gun by the barrels to destroy the sighting-in. Having discovered this, I gave it back to the seller.

I have had other combination guns, but with joined solded barrels. There has never been any problem with them.

I have 3, 2 with soldered barrels and one with seperate barrels.  the 2 with the soldered barrels will stay under an inch all day, the other one is about a 3"er.  Soldering those barrels together makes them as stiff as a bull barrel and effectively deadens any vibrations.  Such has been my experience with them.

I hope no one here thinks that just because Savage combo's work better one way or another, that "that" sets the preident for "all" combo's...

You'll look long and hard to find a Valmet 412 that "doesn't" shoot amazingly well, and they are all seperated bbl. combo's...  Some drillings have seperated bbls, so the bullets don't climb as the bbl heats up, same with some higher end combo's...

I don't know why some guns shoot better one way, and the next doesn't??
