Had a little supprise waiting for me when I got home last night. My order from a supplier had arrived! Included was a LimbSaver pad and set of Signature Zee Rings for the 45-120.

After the thread wherein we discussed recoil pads, I just went ahead and ordered the LimbSaver since it seemed to be the best pad in most member's opinions. At Tim's suggestion I had gone through all the templates and ended up selecting a grind to fit. It is oversized and I will leave it as such until I decide on what stock I will use. $:-\$ Mounting it was a snap and, after having cut the stock down, I now have the correct LOP for me; 13 3/8 inch.

That factory 14 1/2 LOP is just way to long!

I also needed new rings but have never considered the Signature Zee's before; $:-\$ I normally use Leupold. But Tim, Bill and other members like the Vee's so I ordered a set of mediums. I needed rings because the old Weaver rings I have been using on the 45/70 and my one range trip with the 45-120 are only high enough for the Weaver K2.5 scope that I have been using. That scope's ocular clears the rifle's hammer without much problem. However, I want to put a Lepold VXIII 1.5x5 on the 45-120 and the ocular is to big on that scope to clear the hammer.

And, as a point of information, I found out the ocular's to big to clear the hammer with the medium Zee's also!

So I mounted a Leupold Compact 2x7 instead. And let me tell you, I like those rings!

So much so that they are now my choice for anthing I have that uses a Weaver style base! I'm going to order another set, in high this time, cause I still want to put the 1.5x5 on the 45-120. Then the Medium mounts and the old K2.5 will go on the 45/70 barrel!

Oh Tim! I also ordered that taper crimp die from Lyman!

Loaded 6 more rounds. Upped the charge a full grain.

Sounds good Richard. I also really like the Signature Zee rings and use them on a bunch of rifles.

Sounds like you're almost there, 1gr whole grain, eh??

Get the dremel out, using either a cutoff wheel or a sanding drum, remove the tip of the hammer spur so it's flush with the top of the hammer extension, touch up with bluing and you're probably good to go with the Leupy VXIII in medium Sig Zees.

I put a small hole in a newspaper that fits over the hammer spur and use a little masking tape to hold it in place and seal it on the hammer, it will keep the grinding dust out of the action.

I think the results will be nicer than using a hack saw, but a file would work too, it only takes a few seconds with the dremel and a good rest for my hand to steady the tool for good control, I've done many, many of them. As with trigger jobs, the first one is always the hardest.

What is a signature VEE ring?

If you speaking of the Signature ZEE rings with the inserts yea they are nice. Much nicer, stronger and better made than the Leupold Rifleman rings. But, perish the thought...

They are not as nice as the Leupold PRWs ...

Tim is right as rain, trimming that hammer is easy stuff!! Take your skirt off and have at it!!

Just so we're on the same page, what data are you using to be below my starting load? You must mean the data that I worked up with QL for Tyler, right? I'd start with AA's data and work up, easier on the body!!

If you're shooting those wimpy loads you'll be ok, but when you step up to my level you best make sure your eyebrow takes shelter before you try to shoot that thing with a scope. You actually might be ok, I'm so small the recoil jerks me around but you might not actually move that much. I know I'm not shooting mine with a scope and real man loads though.

Hey Tim,

I'm using a starting charge that's between the max load listed in the AA data and the beginning charge on the data you worked up on the QL. I figured that since the max charge AA listed was under 30K, and your's were projected to be under 40K, my starting load should still be way under max for the Handi. By interpolation, using the listed, projected and actual velocities as a comparison check, it seems the projected pressures may be pretty close. Plus I sprinkled the blood of a freshly killed chicken around the shooting bench...

BTW, I ordered the taper crimp die from Lyman. It cost about $4 more then from T of the W but I got it last night. It works pretty good. Good enough anyway!

Thanks for the feedback on the crimper, I didn't load any ammo, just crimped one that was already loaded to see what it looked like, I think it will do a better job than the 45-70 FCD did, it doesn't work as nice as it does on the 45-70 and slipping that spacer on each round is kind of a PITA, I think I'm gonna like the Lyman die.

It sounds like you're getting a lot of fun out of the 120. Do you take it to the office too? It might be an excellent collections tool!! All you'd have to do is show them the bullet

Naw, can't take it to my office... heaven forbid anything that shoots be allowed in an Atlanta Courthouse! By anybody who knows how to use such a thing anyway!

Kathie had a ladies night out tonight so I stopped off at Hooters for beer and wings. I like the wings!

And the beer... Don't even look at them young wimmins...

When I got home I filled up the 45-120 stock butt hole with a combination of 44 cal Hornady swaged bullets and shot from 10 sacraficed 12 gauge shells. The rifle now balances just in front of the trigger guard and handles much livelier. With the extra weight and recoil pad I can't wait to shoot it this weekend!

You're right Pete, I'm having a lot of fun with that rifle gun!

But, knowing me, after I work up a hunting load, kill a deer with it and get a 500 gr. bullet to at least 2150 fps, it'll go back into the safe for a good while. Guns is like wimmins, after you get 'em doing everything you want it's time to move on...

Measure it with a micrometer, mark it with chalk and cut it with a torch!

When Ruger first brought out the 454 I had to have one! I bought a 7.5" and hated it! I like shorter barrels, took it out to the garage, marked it to 5", put a fresh blade in the hacksaw and proceded to "saw" notice I said saw and not cut! the blade wouldn't make so much as a scratch! then I remembered the angle grinder under the bench

2 minutes later a nice 5" barrel was staring back at me from my brand new, 1 day old 454

Another hour later it had a nice crown and sight reinstalled and was just the gun I wanted at the time.

250 grainers, now you boys are talking my language.
I don't need the knock down power of a heavy bullet.
I am after a flat trajectory.
A 250 or 300 is plenty of bullet for deer, just don't want to have to hold over with open sights.

I don't think the 250gr TSX is a real good choice, its BC is .136", the 300gr TSX-FB is .234". I did some calculatin tho, the 250gr could be pushed just over 3000fps.....at 55kpsi which is Barnes' limit for their Ruger data.

The round isn't ruined, it still chambers, I'm sure it will straight out with some pressure inside!! I've tried ironing cases with the dies, it works if the wrinkle is slight, but this is more than slight!! $:-\$

I see the difference.
The 300 looks to be the one.
Don't need 3000fps but a 300 at around 2500-2600 should make for a flat shooter.

And Tim, now that you got this started,

how much are a box a them 300 gr. things gonna cost me!?

Lets see here... I gotta work up 45-120 loads with 500, 405, 350 and 300 gr. bullets. And I gotta clock 45-70's using 405s w/ 28 gr. of 2400 and 300's with 28 gr. of 2400. $:-\$ Am i forgetting anything?
