my  eyes  sight  is  not  the  greatest  using  open sights  so  i  chose 60  yards  top  do  this  task   i  sighted  1  inch  High  using  winchester  300 gr jacket hollow points  i  know  i  know  i  should  be using  the  soft points  or  a  good  cast   but  id  have  to  drive  at  least  50  miles  to  get  some.  or  order  though  one  of  the companies  like  Garret  buffalo bore  or  core bon   i  shot  1  box  shooting  3  5  shoit  groups  all  were  within  1.5  inches  and  i  was  extreemely  happy  with  this  performance  considering  i  had  a  makeshift  rest  across  my tool box  on  the  truck  which  was  a  pillow   it was  very  uncomfortable     the  recoil  was manageable  the  first  15  the  last  5   i  felt  and  have  some  rewards  for  shooting  a  box  of  ammo  at  one  time   i  would  sure  like  to  try  some  Garrets   or  buffalo  bore 400 gr  at  2000  to  see  what   it  feels  like.  i  am letting  it  dry  up  at  the  lease   but  the  rain  keep[s  coming  so  cant  get  any  corn  in  the  bottom  where  i  hunt   but  as  soon  as  i can  i  am  going  after  me  a  good  boar  or  sow  i went  to  put  a  shoulder  shot  and  see  what  a  300 gr  JHP  will  do   would  like  a  hard  cast  400  and  see  how  that  works  luckily  if  i  throw  corn  out  there  will  be  no  shortage  of  my favorite  game  animal  so  hopefully  i  will  be  able  to  post  the  results

Howie,

1.5" groups at 60 yards with open sights isn't all that bad.   I remember shooting my .375 H&H with open sights and I was similarly getting 1 to 1.5" groups at 50 yards.  I don't think that it was me as it was the difficulty of aligning the factory sights.

I did get a scope though, and would you believe that, with about $750 worth of custom work, it now shoots better than 1/2" groups at 100 yards@!!

Are you planning on mounting a scope to your 45-70?  I have an Elite 3200 1.5x-4.5x-32mm and it's great!

Howie if you still have the 45/70 and want to some cast loads get up with me and if you have the brass I will load you some 405 or 300 gr bullets for $7 a box.

Howie,
Im not sure on the buffalo bore but the garetts are about 50 bucks a box of 20. Not worth it, not for hogs.  Maybe if you were hunting brown bear or griz. Have a friend load you up some 405s at about 1800fps, more than enough for hogs and still more abuse than youll really want to put up with off a bench. If you still insist on the expensive stuff though go with the garett 540gr hardcast hammerheads at 1800fps, regardless though make sure your gun can handle the pressure of these things or youll have a real problem.
