Feeding problems with .25WSSM
« on: March 17, 2009, 05:13:46 PM »
I have in the shop a Winchester rifle chambered in 25 WSSM. The fellow brought it in complaining it would not chamber the 2nd and sometimes 3rd round, and sure enough it wanted to cant the round up into the inside of the action too far. After he left I found that if you worked the bolt smartly it would feed the cartridge into the chamber much better but not 100%. Before I fiddle with anything I thought I would see if this is common with this cartridge/rifle combo. Everything looks fine and it's a blind magazine if that helps. I appreaciate in comments. Thanks.     greer

My wife still has a Browning in 243WSSM, even though I despise it! It will hang a round from the mag to the chamber regularly. It seems to smack into the back edge of the barrel. A quick snap of the bolt usually chambers the best. I think it's got something to do with that fat case coming out of the mag. Maybe like the shoulder hanging and raising the bullet too high.

Thanks for the reply. I might just tell him to work the bolt a little snappier. greer

Yup, it's a common problem. I have a Stealth 2 in 25 wssm. Same problem. I fixed mine by putting a single shot follower in it. Problem solved.

 ;D

Of course, mine's a bench gun, so no biggie, but if he actually WANTS to use the magazine...

Check the ammo for OAL - feeding has been a reported issue in particular with the heavier weight (longer in length) cartridges for the 25 WSSM's.

Thanks. I'm not sure what wt. the bullets are. They probably are heavier.  greer

One thing that can be changed without messing with things too much is the shape of the spring under the follower. You might tweak it a bit to put more upward pressure on the front of the follower, and that might help a bit. Later guns were reported better than the earlier ones in the WSSM calibers. Some parts are available for some Winchesters, so you might check out the Winchester parts catalog online too...

I have a couple of these rifles. Tweaking the Spring may help a bit , but what I have found the cartridge rim seems to bind on the extractor. I took my extractor off the bolt and polished it. Especially where the cartridge rim first comes in contact with it. I think the tolerance is a bit tight. That was the fix for the 243 wssm. I have not shot the other enough to do anything to it yet.
