1916 Spanish mauser
« on: March 18, 2009, 03:19:52 AM »
Hello All,
I'm new here so first I wanted to say hello, and ask a couple of questions. I have been reading some of the previous post's and I was wondering if anyone out there has some information on where I can find a Heavy varmint style barrel (somewhere in the neighborhood of .920) in .22-250 that will fit my 1916 Spanish Mauser? I have read many opinions on the draw backs to this rifles receiver in regards to the weakness of the action so I started looking around (Midway Brownells, etc) and I cannot seem to find the correct barrel to fit it. or I’m not asking the correct question. If anyone knows of distributer I sure would appreciate the info.
Thanks,
HAMTTX

I need to go home and grab my Mauser book, but if i remember right the 1916 is a small ring 93 action.
Grab the rifle and (Check to see it is unloaded) Pull the trigger.  Now lift the bolt, Do not cycle the action, did the firing pin just reset?
No?  It's a small ring 91-93.
Hit me back on this so I can find it easier and I will have answers for you.

I'm sure ER Shaw can fix you up as well as most other barrel makers.  You could get a barrel from Midway or Brownells for the M98, turn down the shank and rethread.  Many will tell you of the hazards of "soft" Spanish Mausers and in particular the M1916s.  However, the conversion you are talking about was a very common one back before the age of internet forums.  If your action is in good condition I wouldn't hesitate to make that conversion if that's what I wanted to do.  I also would convert the bolt to cock on opening.

I have a M1916 I have shot out 2 barrels on in .308W which was converted to cock on opening.  It is on another barrel and is doing fine. I have done numerous conversions for others and have 3 SRs thus converted.

Before I tell you what pressures Mauser really designed the SRs for and what actual 7x57 milsurp pressures really run I'll let others make their comments.
