Ultra in 45/70 price?
« on: March 18, 2009, 04:01:00 AM »
I searched and know I must have missed it, but what are the Ultra stainless 45/70 rifles [no sights] bringing?
I've found an as new in box one used for display at a show, never fired or sold, for $349. Good price? I miss shooting paper patched lead pistol bullets in any of the .458" rifles I've had. This one might be purchased just for fun and PP bullet loads.

Hello from Georgia !!

I bought an Ultra about 5 years ago and got it for $300 out the door, so I would say that may be a fair price. Of course you may be able to shop around and find it for less, but hey, I bet it will not be around long for that price. As for using it for fun with pp bullets, I am sure that would be cool, but the rifle has far more potential than that. I have a regular wood stock Handi in 45/70 and I LOVE IT !!!! I have taken a few deer, varmints and killed reams of paper, and it just keeps getting better. I had considered swapping stocks so that it could wear the attractive laminates but it is so good the way it is, I have chosen to leave it as is. I would highly reccomend that you do whatever is neccessary to acquire the rifle. I know that nearly everyone here will agree with me when I tell you......" You will never regret that decision!" Good Luck and keep us posted !!

I've actually had one before,,the standard Handi rifle in 45/70. Killed a few deer with it and generally just enjoyed having a HANDI RIFLE with such a BIG HOLE in the barrel!
I may get this one. By the way, which receivers are they equipped with,,,high pressure or the standards?

The SS 45-70 Ultra Hunter is all stainless, frame too which is the first they've ever made. H&R1871 has never offered a 45-70 on an SB1 shotgun frame, just SB2, the old H&R that went out of business in 1986 only had one frame which was cast iron, their 45-70 Shikari was only rated for trapdoor loads, a modern SB2 framed 45-70 is good for ruger loads.....if the shooter is!!  ;D

I posted a link to my range report in reply #2,  use the search function for 45-70 Ultra selecting just this forum and search only in subject, you'll get lots of hits.  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php?action=search

Thanks, I bought that one two years ago when a Boyd's dealer was selling them on ebay, it came with a Pachmyr Decelarator pad, so I swapped it off of my 7x57, the factory Ultra pad is a thin hard pad, same as on the 243 Ultra Hunter t-hole. It's the same stock that comes on the USH t-hole, can be ordered from H&R or Boyd's as a second when they have them in stock.

Looked at it again yesterday. It's a 'new' gun that was displayed at the SHOT Show...put back in box. Never shot just handled a bit. No marks of any kind.
I may go get it today.
