You learn something new every day.
« on: March 18, 2009, 01:48:25 PM »
You guys may already know this but I just learned this. I was searching the net for tips on growing Green Beans. I grew a bunch last year and had a good crop. Well I found this link. http://www.ehelpfultips.com/how_to_grow_green_beans_from_dry.htm

I have never eaten Pinto beans. I don't even know what you would put them in. Well anyways. They say Pinto beans are the seeds of Green Beans. I just never knew that. They say you could plant the Pinto beans that are in your pantry to grow Green Beans. I don't think I would but I guess you could in a pinch. The ones I grow are the Kentucky Wonder and produce very well here in Pa. Dale

Throw in an almost gone ham-hock or a big old ham bone with a bunch of meat still on it and THEN you'd have some GOOD eatin'...  Gotta cook that stuff for about a whole day.  Nice and thick.  Throw some chopped up jalapeno's in the corn bread and it goes from GOOD eatin' to AWWW DANG!  THEM'S SOME GOOD BEANS!!!

At Grandma's house we grew up on "manast and beans"  Its the same with the ham bone, beans and the greens.  At the time we weren't really excieted about old grandma's manast but we sure do miss it today.  When i think of grandma's cooking it feels like it was centuries ago or in another life.  We ate good and it was cheap too in them days.

Oh Man! Let those beans soak overnight, throw in a ham bone with some meat scraps hanging off it and buddy you got a party! Just reminded me of my Mom who passed away about 6 weeks ago, she could put together a pot of bean soup that would raise the roof,(Figuratively and literally)  :o

Two things I can't believe...   :(
One, I missed this thread until now, and
Two, you ain't never had pinto beans!   :o

I don't think they come from green (snap) beans though...  :-\  but what do I know...  :-[

Well, I do know that whatever dried beans you fix you got to have a good stock.  I do a Ham & Lima Bean soup and black eyed peas as part of my traditional New Years Day dinner and pinto beans whenever I get a craveing.   Start with a ham bone and fixins for the limas since that's a soup; start with hog jowls for the blackeyed peas for the meat and good pot licker, and use whatever you want for the pinto's 'cause they so tasty anyway!   ;D

Darn, I'm makin myself hungry!   :-[

Me too Richard, but could Pig tails be substituted for the hog jowls? I'll eat pig tails all day long, but I'm not sure I could handle eating their cheeks.

I don't believe that pinto beans are simply green beans. All beans that I have ever grown are in a pod like green beans, but their are numerous types of seed available. The appearence of say a top crop been seed and a pinto bean are completely different in both taste and appearence. With the exception of the pinto beans use in mexican recepies, I prefer to cook mine in equal portions with great northerns to inhance the flavors. If you are lucky enough to have a bacon rind cut it in small squares and cook it with the beans.

Sorry Pinto beans are great, but only Great Northerns in my bean soup.
Hillbill--Thanks for clearing that up. Just because it gets dry and you can pick it and shell it doesn't make it a Pinto bean.

Also very true!   ;D  As I said earlier, I do a big pot of Lima Bean soup, using Great northerns of course, every New Year's Day.  I really can't imagine "Pinto Bean Soup"...  :-\

I have cooked pintos and great northerns long as i can remember,
but don't guess i understand bean soup, what it is.

I've also had a meal before called Ham and Beans which really had very little to no "soup" or liquid involved. Could this be where the difference is?

Ya know, that may be the reason I do my ham and lima bean soup and I just never realised it!   :o  I used to eat meals that came in cans contained in little brown boxes!  One of my favorites was... HAM and Beans!   ;D

I would guess that a lot of guys who had to eat their ham and beans that way are not so fond of them to this day. Must have left a helluva impression on you.
