Rem 700 sps varmint 308
« on: March 18, 2009, 05:41:49 PM »
I'm looking very serious at a 700 sps varmint.  Rem specs show that this rifle is a long action.  Can anyone confirm whether it is short or long action.  Also looking for quality aftermarket mag kits for short and long action 700's similar to Cabelas Kwik Klip system.  Anyone know of any others out there.

I just can't wrap my mind around calling a .308 a VARMINT rifle.

Be that as it may Remington does NOT chamber long actions to .308 only short actions to the best of my knowledge. Me thinks that where ever you got that it was just a typo error.

SPS Varmints are all short action, there are no long actions available in that line.  The regular SPS line can be had in both SA and LA.  The only Remington long action .308 that you will find is on the M24.

For quality aftermarket magazine kits you will pay a bit but the Badger Ordnance M5 has been around for a while and is top quality.  Also VBull is reported to be very good as well.  Then of course you could always upgrad the stock on your SPS Varmint to an AICS chassis and run their detachable mag system.  They are all quite a bit more expensive than the Cabela's system, but also a heck of a lot more sturdy as well.  The Badger will require inletting of the stock as well.

Darn it Diggler, you beat me to the punch on that one. ;) And if I'm not mistaken, a couple of the reasons that the .308 showed up in a long action on the M24 included that the military could easily convert the .308s to 300 Win Mags for longer ranges and that at the time there was a shortage of short action receivers and the military needed the weapons like right now, so they just used the more available long action receivers to get the ball rolling faster. Something like that anyway.

Edit: gave credit where credit was deserved. ;)

GB,
I have a remington 700V (Varmint) in 308 win.  Great deer rifle.
I guess it is easier to stick the 308 version of the varmint rifle into a varmint section in the catalog than to make a whole different section on bean field rifles.
Marxman,
Both of my 700's one is the V in 308 and the other is a SPS in 223 are short actions.
I had a M700BDL in 30-06 and the action is not that much longer.  I think the bolt was a little less than 3/4 of an inch longer in the 06 version.

You are pretty much right on that one Skunk, except for the .300 "Rem" Mag part.  ;D .  Nice to see others on here have some knowledge on the military/tactical side of the house.  Have a good one.

Yes Sir you are correct Diggler. I looked into it again and it appears that it was originally intended to be chambered in the .30-06, but "there was not enough .30-06 ammo in a single lot in the Army's inventory to test and develop the system so they quickly changed to the 7.62x51mm NATO (308 Win) and left the action the same as there was not enough time for the manufacturers of the stock and floorplate to make the change to short action. The fact that they could convert them to .300 Win Mag was an unexpected benefit to the SF groups and was never actually designed into the system."

The quoted text above (in blue) is from a review of the U.S. Army M24 Sniper Weapon System (SWS) that Mel from Sniper Central did awhile back. Here's a link to that review in case you're in interested in reading it (you probably have all ready read it ;) ).

Also Diggler, it's very nice to have more Soldiers like you on the forum that enjoy and share their knowledge "on the military/tactical side of the house." God Bless you and thank you for your service to our great country.

LOL actually Skunk I was just giving you a hard time about the "Rem" in the "300 Rem mag" that you posted above.  I figured you'd meant "Win" instead, and it was just a typo.

Anyways, I appreciate your support.  Great site you guys have here.

When He wrote 300 Rem I thought he was talking about the new 300 Rem Ultra Mag (RUM)
But I think they need Magnum actions not long action.  Or is it standard?  308 is short, 30-06 is Long or Standard, and 375 is Mag.
Some one set me strait.

McWoodDuck, my son has a BDL chambered in 300 Ultra Mag and it's just a Long Action with a Mag bolt face.
