About the only thing he went on about a couple years ago, that I really disagreed with him on was the Terri Schivo case. The women was brain dead, period. Pull the plug and let her go home.
Sorry, but this was mentioned, and I can not let this go without a response.
Terry Schiavo was not brain dead. She suffered brain damage. It's unclear how the brain damage occurred, but there were suspicious circumstances involving her husband.
At the time the feeding tubes and iv's were removed, she was conscious, alert and responsive.
She was just as capable of feeling pain and suffering as you and I are.
That was a monumental event, more so than what you might think. The final outcome, in which she was deprived fluids and nourishment, mandated by a court decision, indicates the total lack of humanity by many in our society.
To me, it was a scenario right out of a repressive regime. Feel free to choose which ever one you feel is most appropriate.
Look at history, and for the most part, MOST civilizations have been noted for man's inhumanity to man.
In America, up until now, one of our strengths has been that we value life. Our norm as a society has been that we abhore cruel treatment of other humans. I know we are not perfect, in this regard.
With Terry Schiavo, a judge mandated feeding tubes were to be removed, she was to be deprived of fluids, and she was not to be given an opportunity to eat or drink under her own power. That is a death sentence, a slow, painfull, lingering death sentence, imposed by a judge, on a handicapped helpless human being.
As far as I am concerned, everyone in government who facilitated this, bears responsibility for this act.
That was a horrible event, in my mind, one of the most significant events of my life. It tells me where we have come.
Do you ever watch WW2 documentaries, or read about the Nazi's. Do you see what they became and what they did. The nazi regime was not an isolated event in human history. Do you ever wander if it could happen here?
What was done to Terry Schiavo should answer any of these questions.
