My first time...
« on: March 19, 2009, 07:24:06 AM »
got ya' thinkin' didn't I???  heheheee  Actually it was my first time doing ANY WOODWORKING of any kind.  We got backed into a corner at work for a going away presentation piece for one of my soldiers.  I had an idea for a block of wood with a "sword in the stone" effect using a KA-BAR as the sword.  So I headed off to our post woodshop and got some tutoring and help.  Ended up with a 10" (l) x 5"(w) x 4" (h) block made of pear.  I got it all squared up, ran it through the planer, the joiner and the sander.  Then I split it down the middle.  I sandwiched in a 7 mm thick piece of pine for contrast (wanted a hard wood but they didn't have any scrap since it had all been hauled off the day before).  I made a cut out in the pine in the shape of the knife blade.  Some wood glue, about 25 clamps (okay, 10) and 24 hours later I was back at it.  Back to the big sander for a BUNCH of passes taking .2mm at a time... after that I softened the edges with a hand sander and rounded the corners by hand.  Four coats of tung oil/linseed oil really brought out some grain and darkened it up nicely.  With an engraved brass plate and the knife sticking out, it just really looks nice.  I think I've found something that I could really like to do!  I know a bunch of y'all are accomplished woodworkers and this is like childs play but DAMN I'm happy with what I made.  Just had to share...

Pics would be good.

That's what woodworking is all about, standing back and admiring what you created out of a pile of wood.

I'm no woodworker either but I like to let the chips fly every now and then.
If the project comes out good... that's a bonus ;)

Okay... never posted a pic here so I'll try.  I attached it.  I hope it shows up...

BTW - without much experience, I'd have to say that pear is HEAVY...

Actually making something good with your own hands is one of the soul foods derived from woodworking. Another is that you made a nice presentation for a guy that you couldn't buy anywhere. I hope the soldier who gets it appreciates that, my bet is he will treasure it.

Thanks for the picture. For a first time effort, you did a fine job. Since you say you enjoyed building that piece, you should try your hand at more projects. You just may find you have a real talent for it and it can be a great hobby or profession with practice. Woodworking is one of those talents that people are born with or they aren't. If you have the knack for it, the more advanced skills can be learned. Some people can do amazing things with wood, others can't cut a straight line if their life depended on it. Try some more pieces, you may find you are one of the lucky ones. Good job.

Funny,  I haven't even given to the guy yet and already have a request for another one for a Lt Col who is leaving next month.  Basically the same but with a one inch bevel around the top.  I'll have to get started on it see where it leads.  This time I'm going to split it on an angle across the bottom one third and at an angle instead of vertically.  Got it in my head, just gotta figure out the cuts...  this stuff could be fun.  Have to keep it small since I get to use other folks scraps for free.  I don't want to spend a lot of money on wood until I get more of a clue about what I'm doing.

The guy that runs the place just made a wooden display map of the continent of Africa.  Each country is individually cut out like a jig saw puzzle.  Each country is a different type of wood.  Basically a huge 5x6 jigsaw puzzle.  Impressive.  Maybe I can get a picture of it.

The wooc in the tiny quantities you are using won't beak the bank, if you can fond a source that will sell small pieces.
