That's all I shoot out of my .270, they shoot so well I don't want to try any other loads.  I have shot numerous deer and coyotes with the Super X Silvertips. Awesome, but they are getting pricey though.

I purchased 500+ of the discontinued 140-grain Silvertip boattail for the 270 Winchester.  All that I have weighed zero out at 140-grains.  I am use to getting bullets that very a little, this bunch does not vary.  They are nicely polished and very accurate.  I wish I had bought a couple thousand.  They are accurate out of the Remington 700 and Savage 110CL.

Are the factory loads for the .270 130 grains boattails or flat base bullets??

Back when they were available I bought some to load in 30-06 and in 30-30.   The latter I bought in bulk and still have around a thousand of them.  The 150 grain spirepointed ones worked really well out of my 06.  I too am one of those that wish they were still available.  Those 170 gr flatpoints are accurate and work really well, and I'm glad that I acquired about 1500 of them.  They need to bring the good ol' silvertip back.

Those that actually know the bullet you are asking about (you won't find any in Walmart for $22) will tell you in terms of today's outstanding bullets the Silvertips are a medioce choice for use on mid - large game. Anyone shooting a Coyote with an orginal SilverTip would see the same response as if shot by a fmj - single hole right through the pelt. The orginal Silvertips were designed for big game hunting to compete with the bronze tip Remingtons and Nosler partitions of the era. In my use Noslers were superior for holding together when a bone was hit and todays less expensive Hornady, Speer or Sierra soft points perform better. However there is no denying the 'ole Silver Tips sure look sexy. The 270 and 30 cal's will kill deer size game dead just as fast today as 30 years ago with a good hit to vitals and are pretty accurate. I would keep them and bring them out when you want to have an old time discussion or for shooting vampires.

I didn't know any factory ammunition was using Nosler bullets back when Silvertips were designed. I ran this past my Dad and he flatly stated the best factory ammunition and the longest shot he ever took on a Maine Whitetail was with his 257Roberts using the 100gr Winchester Super X Silvertips back in the very early '50's. He shot a lot of Hornady, Sierra, and Nosler handloads from the late '50's to now. Silvertips were not available for handloading where we lived and we migrated to Nolsers for our premium loads, and nearly anything for everything else. A box of handloaded bronze tips are still waiting to draw blood. I found some Silvertips at Wal-Mart a few years ago and they were 14bucks a box for my 32WSpcl. Again, the only factory load my Grandfather would use in his 94Winchester.

If you found a box of factory ammunition with Silvertips for $22, or any other price for that matter, and you want to hunt deer with them, they will perform quite satisfactory for you. I used to know folks who believed they had to use Winchester ammunition in Winchester Rifles, Remington ammunition in Remngton Rifles and so on. Shoot 'til you win!

Like Siskiyou, I bought several hundred 140 gr. Silvertip boat tails in .270 a few years ago. Can't remember who was selling them on the web, but I bought 750 of 'em at a great price and still wish I could have bought more! I thought I'd have a lifetime supply until my then 15 year old discovered them and since he knew how to reload, started using them to hunt rabbits, ground squirrels, gophers and every other kind of varmint. That kid was getting EXPENSIVE until I hid them away. Anyway, he's killed 3 mule deer with them from about 125 yds to almost 300 yds and all 3 went Bang!, Flop! Bullets had complete pass through and massive damage to the chest cavity without a lot of bloodshot. My one muley I shot also dropped, but I'll admit I hit it high just under the spine. What more could you want in a medium game bullet?

Don't know what the old SILVERTIPS will do on a yote but I have taken many, many foxes and hundreds of groundhogs with them along with my fair share of deer back in the 60s-80s and I can tell you they did more than just punch a hole in them.
I just sold all my old 270 brass to a friend.
There were over 150 boxes of 270 brass.
That's over 3000 rounds of which 1200 were the old SILVERTIPS in 130 & 150 grain.
Most of those 1200 were used on groundhogs over the years so I can speak from experence.

Win brought the SILVERTIP line back out a couple of years ago.
I bought some but have not tried any yet to see if they preform the same as the old stuff.

I still have some loaded ammo in 06,270,30-30, and some handloads in 307.
My hunting buddy is working on a deal with a man who used to have a gunshop and still has a lot of ammo left in storage.
We had a look at it last week.
We found 2 complete skids of factory SILVERTIP ammo and several thousand SILVERTIP bullets, all new in the box.
I am hoping we can get on a deal with him for everything he has.
Like 1 full skid of 22 jet.
About 1/2 skid of 256.
All the old stuff, 30-40,405,32-40,32-20 HV,250-3000 ect,ect.

It all depends on what he wants $ wise.
