300wm pistol?

Few years ago TC offered 300wm in a 15" pistol brl. Does anyone own one? Shot one?

It would appear that no one here has shot one including me.  I don't think it's a bad idea though; I doubt it would be any worse than a 500 S&W Magnum.

My dream, an Encore handgun in 375 Ruger.

That was my thought... I was trying to find information for accuracy. Some guns need the length to make the round stable enough to make a good group.

Id hate to invest in one only to find its a shotgun rather than a rifle.

Theres a few people out there as insane as I am and that shoot a 300wm in pistol

   It's been several years now and I can't remember who it was, but somebody was using one....believe he had a 26" heavy rifle barrel cut down to 16"....reported very good results, if I remember correctly.   I don't think I'll be tempted on the 300 though.  But, I also remember quite a ways back....my son mentioned something about getting a 45-70 pistol barrel and my reply was like "you gotta be out of your mind"....I now have(and have enjoyed them quite a lot) 3 pistol barrels in that caliber, so who knows???

45-70 is  nice round for hand guns IMO, the 400 grains shoot beter than the 300 grains (less recoil and better gruops)

I am not looking to get 5/8 moa out of the 300wm pistol, but I dont want to cut it and end up with a 4" group at 100 yards either.

I'd like to take it once or twice ground hog hunting, got out rifle hunting with it for deer and If I go hog hunting take that.

From my experience in shooting rifle rounds in handguns I would predict the following:

1.  Accuracy will be fine.  Probably better than 1 inch at 100 yards.
2.  Muzzle blast will be scary and not to be trifled with without ear protection.
3.  Muzzle flash will be impressive and should impress women.
4.  You'll probably want a brake.

I had a 7-30 waters 14" super, shot 5/8" at 100 years, flash and recoil was not bad.... INCREDABLE at night!!! but I made the mistake of pulling the trigger on a deer with one ear plug plartly out... No long lasting dammage, but i'll never do that again.


The big reason I ask about accuracy being affected is that I read in a few places that a 25-06 (different caliber, I know) needs a 24-25" brl to get the bullet stabilized to make it shoot worth a hill of beans.

I don't know about the 300wm, don't have one and never shot anyone elses - but can comment on the 25-06.  My 15" 25-06 barrel consistantly shoots easily under 1" at 100 yards with a 117gr. Sierra Spitzer and either IMR 4350 or IMR 4895. I would have had many groups under 1/2" if I had stopped at three shots, but always get greedy and judge my loads by five.  I know I am not getting the speed out of the 15" barrel as I do the rifle but the accuracy is there.  last loads chrono'd ~ 2400 with some room to work them up a little yet.

HUH... the 2506 was something I read a few places when I was loading for a 2506. With your input I feel alot better about cutting the rifle up.

Silhouette shooters found out - by actually doing it - that most rifle rounds shot very accurately out of 15" and shorter barrels.  Since most of the powder is burned in the first few inches of the barrel, the extra barrel length serves only to give additional time for the bullet to accelerate as the gas pressure constantly drops. 

We also found that the powders that gave the highest velocity in long barrels gave the highest in short ones too.  The caveat here is that muzzle pressure is higher with slow powders, making blast and flash very high. In some cases the higher muzzle pressure can disrupt the bullet as it exits, but that is usually caused by a bad crown.

I hate to break it to you, but the muzzle blast of a 7-30 Waters is actually pretty mild.  A .308 or 7-08 is far louder in the same length barrel.  I can only imagine the blast of the .300 WSM given its much higher initial chamber pressure....

ahh ha!! Thats was my next question, I know a bad crown will kill a guns accuracy. What will a muzzle break thats only ported at the 3 and 9 o'clock pisition do to accuracy? Is the 360 deg 30 hole ported break better than the 6 ported 3-9 o'clock port?

Guy swear by them on both side of the fence. Is it the typical Ford/Chevy/Dodge fight for muzzle breaks?

The 7-30 was the first ported handgun that I owned. I have shot pistols that have alot more punch.
