CBS: Rapists allowed to join US military

Raw Story
Friday, March 20, 2009

From CBS:

The military is increasingly issuing something called “moral waivers,” so they can enlist military personnel with felony convictions for crimes like rape and sexual assault.

“We don’t enlist convicted rapists in the armed forces of the United States,” said Michael Dominguez, the principal under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness. “If there’s a consensus ‘that kid needs a second chance, I think he’s got it in him to be a solider,’ then they’ll let him into the armed forces.”

In fact, CBS News has learned that both the Army and Marine Corps did issue a number of “moral waivers” to enlistees with felony convictions for rape and sexual assault - something not acknowledged in a follow-up letter from Dominguez.

While I don't condone it, it has been done.  Maybe the military can change these young men, and convince them there is a better way of life.  During my 20 years I talked to many NCOs who had come into the military to keep from going to jail.  Once they discovered that there was another way of life out there outside of the ghetto, and away from the gangs.  They made complete changes in their lives, making the military a career.  They were fine, respectable, outstanding, NCOs.  So the military can change some men's lives, maybe these men are some of the few that will get a second chance and change for the better.

If they don't Ft. Levenworth is not a nice place.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

The Military is just a cross section of the American population. Not as much since the draft was stopped.
so it stands to reason that there are all kinds in the Military! Now that being said a psychological eval will will determine if they are suitable to be amongst people with rifles and other assorted weapons!

OK Team Nelson chime in here! Lets get it from the horses mouth so to speak!

I'm not quite seeing how this works. Have the "enlistees" who have been convicted of the crimes already served their sentences in a prison, or are they getting the moral waivers and joining the military in lieu of going to prison?

That's a good question.

Well it sounds like a better idea than putting them back on the street . Would not be the first time the military made a man out of someone who was useless before they joined .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

For a couple of years there was a military guy on the OK sex offender registry who was living in the barracks at FT. Sill.  The offense took place in one of the eastern states.

I wonder if the waivers were for crimes commited by juvinille offenders that were expunged by the time they were enlisting and trying to start over.
Also I guess it would depend on the circumstances of the rape.  Statitory.....Well
And I am really suprised at CBS carring.  they had no problem with a sexual preditor and rapest being the commander in chief and spouted that it is a personal matter.

CBS only cares to the effect that it might embarrass the military!
