Does anyone know what a good pair of gloves cost that you would use to handle hot stuff like a melting pot or somrthing?

Depends on the source (obviously).

I would search on 'refractory' and such words as safety equipment.

I 'ASSUME' that you're talking lead alloys.  But you COULD be referring to zinc or aluminum alloys which would put you into much higher temperatures.

Monday I'll check to see if I have any catalogs at work of vendors of such products.

In the sticky GBO sponsors and internet Blackpowder Cannons related links at the top of this board if you scroll through the list you will find under Zinc suppliers a company called Budget Casting supplies.  They should have what you need.

I was doing a lot of casting and even when using some commercial hotwork gloves, they melted at the temperatures we were doing, and let too much heat thru even before they melted.   Sorry I forget the trade name.  Last year I ran into a military surplus dealer who had some pairs of kevlar mittens made for mortar crews to use to handle hot gun barrels.  I haven't tried them yet but I have high hopes!

Welding gloves

Generic.  Good for short periods of time.  There are better gloves (come with a better price too) for longer periods of time and hotter temps.

Definitely foundry gloves.  Welding gloves don't hack it at 2000° F.  They aren't even good enough for the infrared radiation heat at that temperature.  Even asbestos gloves don't provide extended exposure protection when actually holding something really hot.  If it needs to be held, find or make some kind of tongs or something like a pouring shank.

How about handling the melting pot like this.  Welding gloves should be just fine with this.

Welding gloves should be fine there since they will be holding the handles of the support pieces, not the crucible itself.

wasnt he talking about melting lead ?

So if you have only mear welding gloves ,do not reach into the furnance while casting bronze and grab the crucible by hand . Because as DD pointed out you "could" use tongs, and a pouring shank . :D

Or not ,YMMV

I think he was planning on melting zinc.
