Remington Model 700 CDL or Savage Model 114 Classic
« on: March 22, 2009, 04:39:53 AM »
Well, it seems I have the bug to get a new rifle and I am sure you all understand!  I would like to know from the owners of the current Remington 700 CDL (30-06) how well made the current model is, and how accurate? An unbiased review of the rifle would be appreciated.  The other choice I am looking at is the new Savage Classic Model 114.  Which would you choose?  I have been hearing good things about Savage lately as being very accurate, good trigger and fit and finish etc.  I would like to get the better of the two.  Which one?   :-\

Hope you posted this some where else to get unbiased big green reviews  ;)
On another note savage's price would be the only decideing factor not to favor buying a remington.
Good luck,

Norseman, you might as well just flip a coin. Both are nice rifles. But right out of the box, I'd give the edge to the Savage (just my opinion you Rem lovers ;) ) because of the lower price, the better trigger (yes, I think the the AccuTrigger is better than the X-Mark), the accuracy (easily equal if not better than the Remington), the fit and finish, especially the Classic line with its highly polished blue metal finish and the dual cross bolt reinforcements on the stock, fully floated barrel, and its new bolt release that gets rid of the infamous Wing release on the right side of the receiver. Plus, with the savage, if you want to change caliber or chambering, you can switch barrels by yourself with only a few tools rather than having to take the rifle to a gunsmith. Just make sure the Savage is a 2009 model if you want the new bolt release design. The 2009 also has the new better looking barrel nut design if that's important to you.

If you have too much of a problem deciding, just get them both. I really like the Remingtons too. ;)

On the current production Model 700 CDL, what kind of accuracy are you guys getting?  I am leaning on going "Green", and possibly getting one in 30-06.  Any inputs?

The last two groups I shot out of my CDL Boone and Crocket in .243 measured 1.2" and .9".  This was at 215 yards.

I have a number of Rem CDLs and all of them have shot out of the box.  I perfer the Rem triger by size and feel.  But I also own a couple of savages.

I own several of both. I have always been a Remington fan, I just love the feel, quality, and accuracy. I gotta say, though my Savages out shoot them. One knock against Savage was the looks. The Classic certainly looks great, and I bet it will shoot lights-out. I guess you cant go wrong with either of them, but price/value ratio, and well know accuracy, tough to find a better gun for the money than the Savage. Just my 2c

I happen to own both , same caliber and all, they both shoot great OTB and cant tell which groups better.
The Savage trigger is great , some dont like the design but its one of the better factory triggers on the market.
The factory Rem trigger breaks clean , I would prefer it a bit lighter but isnt bad.

Both have a similar look with wood , blueing and the black forearm tips. I tend to lean more towards the Remington
but Savage gives a lot for the money and will shoot with or better than most others.
I liked them both so much I bought'em.

That said , if I was forced to pick one .....I'd pick the Remy and not by much.
