338 AI
« on: March 22, 2009, 06:38:16 AM »
Has anyone built a 338 wm AI? If so, would you share what your aproximate gain over a 338 wm was in terms of velocity. I would also like to know how much additional powder you are abale to fit in the case. I have a Mod 70 crf that I am considering AIing,
Thanks,
Tuna

I've never heard of a 338AI. Is it faster then the 338 Win Mag?

I like some of the AI rounds, some such as my 30-30AI Contender showed big gains, my 25-06AI gives 100-125 depending on the load, but my 30-06AI gained very little, just like the Hor. Manual says, less than 100fps usually. The Sierra manual raved about the 6mmAI & rightfully so. It is no shock that the gains offered by the AI rounds vary a good deal due to the percentage increase in powder capacity basically.

The gain in the case of the 338WM would be slight indeed, the case has little taper to begin with. I just don't see a way for this to be worth the bother.

I had a feeling that that may be the case. I am really not dead set on altering this rifle, but it is a canidate for the next project.
