need help clean my ML barrel!!!
« on: March 22, 2009, 06:45:18 AM »
I pulled my .50 cal out of the case today to make sure it was good to go so I could take it to the range this week to try out some new powder, and when I pulled the breech plug out it was rusted BAD!! :'( I guess I didnt get it dried out good when I cleaned it last. I had all of the powder residue out of there but I think I forgot to run a patch with lube on it when I was done. I used almost a whole bag of patches on it, ran a brush through it several times until I thought my arm was going to fall off. Then I ran more patches through it with hot soapy water and then more with two kinds of bore solvent. It is only rusted back by the breech plug, probably 3-4 inches up. the rest of the barrel all the way to the muzzle looks good. What else can I do to get that crap out of there? I just hope I didnt damage the barrel permanently!! >:( I could kick myself right now!!

First- I never store my guns especially a muzzle loader in a case.
Second- Get you some commercial grade 0000 steel wool.  Wrap some around your bore brush and give it a few strokes.  Hope you didn't get any pitting.

thanks Walt, it actually hasnt been in a case for more than a few weeks. It has been sitting out in the open in my work room for most of the time. I will try the steel wool. Thanks for the tip!

well, I tried the 0000 steel wool and it didnt work either :'( It looks like it is pitted some near the breech plug. It looks the worst from the breech plug and up about 4-5 inches. The rest of the barrel looks pretty good. Do you guys think this will hurt my accuracy? Will TC do anything about this? I feel like I cleaned it good before I put it up :'(

I dont think TC should be expected to do anything. Do you? Shoot it and see what it does.

I seceriously dought it will affect your accuracy being at the breach end.
I have seen them pitted badly all the way down the barrel and still shoot.

Now, as for futher cleanup.
Forget the hot soappy water.
I have used boiling water and had to wrap a towel around it to hold the thing then oil it good and still have rust.

This is what works for me and I have never had any rust at all.
I remove the breech and clean with a bronze brush and a pipe cleaner.
I clean the barrel by pulling a bore snake through it two times dry.
Then I run a TC wonder lube patch for round balls down the barrel on a tight jag.
Then I take a plain 3" shotgun cleaning patch coated with the old yellow RIG greese and run it down the barrel then use the leftover patch to wipe down the rest of the gun and the breech plug and reinstall it in the gun loose.

When ready to use it again remove the plug and wipe off the greese then pull a bore snake through one or two times and you are good to go with no rust and never any water touching the gun.
Have been useing this system for years with great results.

Thanks guys! I really dont think its going to hurt anything as its really not that bad and only near the breech area. I am just anal about my gear and want it to be like new if I can keep it that way. I will be taking it to the range Friday afternoon to see how it does. I have some new powder to test out so hopefully it goes well! ;) Jared

I have had good luck with Montana extreme bore cleaner others  have used the cowboy formula in muzzys it removes the fouling and lead .  Also a good bore paste helps.
