P-345 needs minor adjustment
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:37:48 AM »
Evening gentlemen ,

I bought a P-345 around Christmas , finally got to shoot it off the bags.  I was pleasantly surprised , with my loads of Berrys 230 gr. FMJ over bullseye....its cutting holes at 15 yds and giving me sub 2 inch grps at 25 yds....not bad for a "out of the box" weapon.  However its shooting about 2" to the right at 25 yds.  I know I can drift the rear sight...but without any reference marks...and how much would it need ?  I'm thinking of using a pencil to mark the slide and the sight...what do ya think the width of a pencil line ? How hard is it to drift them over...I don't have any brass dowels or punches. I was planning on trying a 1/4" wooden dowel . Or will the sight push over by hand once the set screw is loosened ?   I'm sure someone out there has toyed with Rugers fixed rear sights.  Guess I'm pretty lucky , all my other pistols either have adjustable rears or the fixed have been right on.   Oh. and BTW , I did read the manual , all it says is to loosen the set screw and make adjustments.  Thanks, and regards...irold

Guess you are talking about the FORS (?) formula for sight adjustment values. Remember to move the rear sight in the direction you want to move the bullet strike. Have fun!

D1 / R1 = D2 / R2

For rear sight adjustments:

    * D1 is the distance between point of aim and point of impact.
    * R1 is range from front sight to target.
    * D2 is the length the rear sight must change by.
    * R2 is the distance between front and rear sights.
I usually just make a witness mark on the sight and slide and sight it in by trial and error.

My new P-89 had the rear site slightly off, last summer I loosened the rear site screw and gave it a slight tap with the plastic handle of my screw driver that I always bring.  It was not moved much, but that did the trick, it shoots to point of aim now.

Savage ,

Math was never one of my strong points..........the witness mark , and trial and error method sounds good to me.

Chris ,

recall how much ya moved the sight ?  I can see me going thru 100 rounds of ammo trying to zero my load at 25 yds.  I was thinking of trying a small C-clamp and just pushing it ....maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill.........thanks for the imput guys.
