Newbie Needs Info
« on: March 22, 2009, 01:42:39 PM »
Hello, I am looking into the whole single shot arena for the first time. I like the look and the idea of the H&R rifles but I have some questions and need some advice.

I am wanting to get a survival set together. Common calibers, simple weapons etc,.. I am pretty much set on a .223 and a .308. I want one of each both will wear low to medium powered scopes and will be used for everything from plinking to putting meat on the table. I want no nonsense, do everything guns.

In planning for the "apocalypse" I am foreseeing the day when the optics break/get damaged or whatever and want iron sights on my rifles as a back up. I guess that is all a long winded way of saying, is there a particular model that can be had in both 223 and 308 and that have iron sights on them from the factory.

I was also looking at the Rossi models, and notice that all of those seem to have iron sights on them. I would love to have the H&R rather than the Rossi, simply because the fit looks better form pics on the websites and the H&R is American made. I do however need specific features and will go where the features are.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Out of luck buying one in .223 or .308 with Iron sights however if you have a smith install a front sight the rears fit the scope base mounting holes, easy and not very priecey. Two good caliber choices thou.  Welcome to handie land.

BTW IMHO Rossi is a POS. Just me thou. ;D

Is there a set of, relatively, inexpensive sights that could be barrel mounted so that all I would have to do is remove the scope rail?

Welcome! The 223 Superlight (Compact) comes with sights, but good luck finding one, you might be able to have sights installed on accessory barrels, Gardner used to charge $47 for them, dunno what Ilion charges, but I bet it's about double that if they even do it, barrels that comes with scope rails only are not drilled and tapped for barrel sights, but the two rear scope base mount holes can be used to mount a sight as Bob mentioned. No 308 barrel comes with sights, you could epoxy sights on, it's been done on shotguns, but the gunsmith option is the best way to go. See Peep and Firesights in the FAQs and Help sticky, a great place to spend lots of time reading.   ;)

You could always place a WTB ad on here for a set of sights from a Handi.
I'm sure someone has a set in their goody box. ;)

If my life depended on a firearm it would have to be a 12ga. You can shoot birds and game. slugs or shot your choice.
