7600's stock and recoil?
« on: March 22, 2009, 02:29:01 PM »
I have read on two different occasions here that the 7600 rifle has more felt recoil due to stock shape/design VS the same caliber in another action. Is there any truth to this? Is the stock that different in the 7600 to the point where recoil would be felt more?

Anyone have a 7600 that think it recoils hard?

Thanks!!

My 308 7600 has a bit more recoil than the average 308 bolt action but all you need is a R3 recoil pad and it a non issue

Excuse my ignorance... but what is an "R3" recoil pad and where can I purchase one ?

I was going to go with the Pachmayr pad for my 7600.

The R3 is a fairly new recoil pad from Remington. I think it's used on most of their rifles now, not all.

Thanks for the tips.

To answer your question, yes they have more felt recoil. Compare the butt width on most bolt actions and the 7600 has a thinner stock at the butt. 7600's usually don't have a recoil pad. The synthetics may but wood stocks don't from the factory. A recoil pad will obviously help dampen felt recoil.

I have a pachmyer decelerator on my 760 carbine 3006.  It does a great job....I shoot 180 gr Wchester supremes in it

These are both older 760 models. My BDL with cheek piece has been magna-ported which eliminates muzzle jump but doesn't really reduce felt recoil.  I never wanted to add a pad because it would affect the fit for me.

Check out the difference in the stocks between a 1954 760 and a 1976 760.  Post a pic of your 7600 for comparison.

1976

1954

My 1976 760 in 30-06 always had more felt recoil than my Ruger M77 in 30-06 with the same loads.
The older I get...The better I was.

I found a pistol grip stock helped stop a lot of the 308's recoil with the hand.  I am happy with this rifle, but do need to get the trigger worked on.

My 7600 is a 35 Whelen. I have a heavier .35W bolt gun for comparison, and I don't think it recoils any more. I do have my 7600 in a Bell & Carlson stock, which tends to "give" under recoil but has a harder rubber pad than the Decelarator or Limbsaver (probably because it is wider yet).
I didn't find the wood stock to be markedly worse than the composite stock, and I have also owned one in a (wood) .308. The standard 7600 wood stock is wider at the buttstock than the aluminum plate of the 760 and has less drop, thus less recoil (IMO).
Even a 760 in a .243 seems to kick more than any other models or type action. The advantage of the "pump" is that the recoil helps work the action when shooting in any position but "prone" :). It is one fast, accurate rifle once the trigger is "dealt" with.

I put a Pachmayr Decelerator on my 7600 (.30-06) and never looked back.  Before the pad I could shoot a box of ammo at a sitting.  Now, I'm good for twice that.  A good recoil pad really tames that rifle.

I have recoil pads on both my 760 and 7600. Before that, my 7600 used to kick pretty good (.280)

I've got a 7600 in 35 Whelen that just kicked too hard for my tastes.  I swaped out the stocks for a set from the 223 version of the 7615.  This has the R3 recoil pad and now works just fine.
