youth load
« on: March 22, 2009, 03:29:36 PM »
I was wandering if its ok to shoot a load for a cast bullet with a jacketed bullet.  spefically the accurate 5744 load for the 25/06 with 22 grains of powder pushing 2054 fps also has anyone tried this load.

I can't respond to your load question exactly.  What I can respond to is that I do shoot Jacketed bullets in a "cast load" application.  Specifically, yesterday I was shooting both 147 gr FMJ 8mm and using XXXXXXXXXXXXXX   Basically "the load" from Ed Harris.  I also shot 196 Grian Jacketed.  Both functioned perfeclty and with sites at 400 meters were banging dead center at 100 yds.

I have also shot 145 Gr M80 .30 cal jacketed with reduced load and had no adverse issues.

Proceed at your own risk of course.....I thought Ed Harris himself was the writer who said jacketed worked just fine as well.  I get how there would need to be more force to get hte bullet down the barrel but felt the reason we use Cast was cost.

In most cases using cast data for jacketed bullets is just asking for trouble , if your looking to shoot a reduced load look at Hodgdons H4895 , they have PROVEN DATA to back up their loads !!

Just because someone says that a load is safe does not mean that it will be safe in your firearm or any firearm for that matter .

Stick with proven / tested data from the experts .

Have a look at a Speer Manual, they list SR 4759 for very reduced jacketed bullet loads for the 25-06 and others as well. ;)

Lymans has reduced loads using 4759 and 5744 in the Encore section in the back.
The book is at home and I am in the office but if you can find a copy of Lymans Reloading #48 or #49 you should find it.
If not, I will look it up later tonight
