Ruger Mark II and my wife at the range today
« on: March 22, 2009, 04:38:39 PM »
After a number of times suggesting that she accompany me to the range, today was a beautiful spring-like day and my wife agreed to try it.  I gave her all the safety lessons, made sure she had good hearing protection, and helped her get the feel of the open sight on this pistol.  We started out for the first time shooting at a good paper target, bullseye practice type at 10 yds. for her to gain confidence. She took to it right away and had fun doing it too.  She tends to be slightly perfectionistic so on the second target I gave her some more advice as far as sighting in off the bags, but she actually shot a little better the first target without my "advice"!  The range was a little crowded and we had two women and an older fellow shooting 45s and 380s next to us.  My wife thought that was a little unnerving as most new shooters feel when that happens. We both had a good time and I think she will do it again. Who knows before long she may want her very own 22 pistol. :D
That would be OK with me.

Good idea!  I just was admitted to a private pistol/rifle club and once I get all the member card/keys we will go there.  A lot nicer range with real targets to shoot at and best of all its not crowded. So a nice afternoon at the range and lunch out somewhere sounds like a plan!  My goal is to keep it simple for her, make sure she feels comfortable with the firearm and the surroundings, and have a nice experience.

I never really wanted my wife to be a good shot.  Then I may have to behave...

My wife just told me wants a new single six. Like I have to be told twice to buy a new gun.

My Bisley Blackhawk 45Colt became hers the first time she fired it. I get to buy another one? She never has liked my 41Mag, even with mild loads. We used to Rabbit hunt with 22's a lot in Wyoming and she could outshoot me on any given day in that February wind. I have "given" her several rifles off the rack, but she can claim any that she should want to - not a problem to me.

Way 'ta go!! Range dates are fun! One day a picnic, another at the local whatever...great fun!

I think the Ruger Mark II will keep her interested for awhile at least. I love that gun myself and am glad she is trying it. Just keeping it fun is the way to go.

BBF- real targets was a poor choice of words. I meant metal targets, silloettes, etc. The other nice part is that the shooting benches are under cover and you can shoot on a well lit course at night up till 10 pm. 25, 50, 100 yd range areas. It has a separate section for shotgun trap and skeet too.

Any time you can share an enjoyable afternoon is great.  Although my wife loves to shoot (several 3-position small bore trophies from college) I sometimes have to drag her to the range and then have to drag her away.  I'm not sure I own any of my handguns except for the P22 and 442.  She told me I could sell those anytime I want because she doesn't like them.

When we go to the range I'm required to take at least one Ruger MK and one revolver.  If I want to shoot a Ruger MK, I better take one for myself.
