Not that the guys on GBO forums don't know their stuff on just about any firearm (and a few other subjects as well) but I have found this site to be a great reference for reading and gathering information on my SKS. http://www.sksboards.com/smf/index.php

I think the Type 56 is the Yugo Model, the one with the grenade launcher attachment.

The Chinese government may have referred to one of their SKS variants as a Type 56; it is typical of the Chinese to label things as 'Types'.  My Tokarev pistol is a Type 54-1.  I think though that the Chinese just called this rifle the Es-kay-es, spoken with a Chinese accent....................

I do not believe the Chinese, at the Norinco plant, made the SKS with a grenade launcher attachment.  The Chinese SKSs are typical com-bloc battle rifles.  They may have made some nice ones for guard duty and the like but most are battle rifles that are built to shoot and last, and last, and last.

Some will have chrome lined bores, others will not.  The spike bayonet is indicative of newer models I believe - older models used a blade bayonet.

I had always thought the paratrooper model (shorty) Norinco Type 56 was a ploy to get US buyers a SKs varity like the AK mag fed ones and the farmers pal the scoped ones with thumbhole stocks, I had seen a History channel program that showen mounted chinese military wearing gas masks (both Horse and rider) the rider fireing a Paratrooper type model (from the frontsight to gastube ratio) this was one captured on film go figure?, then there are the few odd stamped receiver sks's that came in with the regular ones back in the late 1980's early 1990's, I thought it was a myth till I saw a series side by side (milled vs stamped) photo's on the "surplusrifle forum" back in early 2008. Albainan SKS's with the long hand guards are not common (no gernade launchers), then the few North Korean Sks's that some how made it into circulation amongst others, l know there are the East German made them but never heard of anybody outside german military having any them, The recent importation of the chromed Chinese ceramony guard ones at $400 ea.

There's a chinese sks thats called a "sino soviet" these were assembled in china using russian manufactured parts.  The russians went to china to teach the chinese how to manufacture and assemble the sks's.  They brought the russian manufactured parts to teach the chinese the assembly.  So your actually buying a russian sks that assembled in china at a chinese price.  These still can be seen at gun shows but be aware of the prices too.  I've seen these priced at $225 at one table and $325 a few tables down.  I'm sure by now these priced much higher.

These can be identified by;

Serial number is a letter followed by 4 numbers,  example  A1234  I believe these run from A to R in the alphabet.
No chinese markings on the receiver
Up side down "U" on the rear site
Blade bayonet
20" barrels

The paratroopers were manufactured for the US market.  They had a 16" barrel and are very accurate too.

Quality wise i'd rate the sks's by;

1. Russian & Chinese tied    (both have chromed lined barrels and are quality sks's)
2. Romanian                         (chromed lined barrel)
3. Albanian                           (chromed lined barrel)
4. Yugo M59                          (no chromed lined barrel)
5. Yugo 59/66                       (no chromed lined barrel)
6. Yugo 59/66A1                    (no chromed lined barrel)

Now that you have a norinco get yourself some good ammo and benchrest it at 100yds and see how good it shoots.
