What kind breech plug for BH209?
« on: March 24, 2009, 03:51:37 AM »
I have a custom ML built on a T/C Contender Frame.  It shoots incredibly accurate with Pyrodex, but I would really like to try this BH209 for less immediate cleaning after hunts.  Sometimes by the time I have dealt with the deer and gotten all of that put away, the cleaning seems quite the chore late at night, and I am obsessive about making it pristine clean.

The breech plug is a simple threaded tube about 1.25" long with a 3/16" hole running full length until right at the 209 primer, where their is a tiny hole.  The face of the plug is perfectly flat on the powder end.  Will this work with BH209?  Is there some other design that is supposed to work better for ignition.  I keep reading that some designs are not good for this powder, but I cannot find a good description of why.
Be honest with yourself.  Can you guarantee you would hit a paper plate at 250 yards...100 yards...50 yards?  Then you have no business replacing the plate with a live animal.

I have a TC Encore, not sure how it compairs to the Contender, but should be simular.  The concave breechplugs work better with BH209 rather than the plug you have. You could try it to be sure, but the deep recess plugs which allow the powder to get closer to the primer fire are the best for positive ignition.

Do the Encore and Contender plugs interchange?

Basically the shortest breechplug fire channel with the largest hole that still controls blowback is what you want for good ignition of BH209 as well as the hottest primer you can use. Federal is one of those.

I know that the hole in the plug is big enough for powder to fill the channel all the way back to near the primer...maybe that will help.  Otherwise, I guess I could shorten the breechplug as the portion that extends into the barrel is not threaded for the last 1/2".  I think taking most of that off would not hurt, but I will check with the maker before trying anything crazy!

I am also hoping that being meticulous about keeping the breechplug clean and using the hotter Fed primers will help also.  I guess there is no good reason not to just try it as is first.  Certainly I will do so as soon as I can find someone local that carries this powder, or find a few local friends who want to try it ans split a larger order.
