which gun should I take for Moose
« on: March 24, 2009, 10:03:08 PM »
I was thinking about heading up North in Saskatchewan to try and find myself a Moose this year and was wundering wich gun I should take. I have a .303 British with a 3-9 bushnel dusk and Dawn scope. an old 30-30 lever action that I havent done very much long distance shooting with( all under 100 yards) and I have my tikka M55 in .243 win. I have a feeling that the .243 well not be enough gun but I am a far better shot with it and have heard of people shooting moose every year with a .243.

Truckloads of moose have been killed by the .303. I'd practice with that and then use it.

thanks I have shot a few deer and coyotes with my .303 so I think I well take it. The 180 grain winchester shell I buy at Wallmart should be good enough or should I load up something else. I don't have any dies for my .303 so buying them loaded is much easier.

Re .243 Win. Your guide/outfitter( I presume you will need one) will not be all that happy with that cartridge, but if you want to use it, use a partition bullet for it.

The 303 Brit has been used in Canada for decades on moose and anything else. I'm not up on current production for this cartridge but would choose Rem Cor Lokts over any WW stuff, you might even find Federal ammo for it up here which would be my second choice.

Forget the 30-30, and the .243.  I have seen far too many Moose walk away after being shot with small caliber, and underpowered guns.  While a Moose is not hard to kill, they are hard to kill quick.  If the cartridge does not do sufficient damage immediately the Moose can get into water, or go places you can not follow right away.  Lost Moose.  The .303 is a very adequate cartridge, many moose have been taken by the Canadians over decades of it's use there.  I've seen a lot of Moose taken here in Alaska with it as well.

Why even consider the other two when you have a proven Moose gun in the .303.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

.303 - NO QUESTIONS ABOUT IT. What if that moose is out there 200+ yds or meters [ depending where you are from]. I was going to take my 45/70 on my moose hunt. Only moose I saw was over 200 meters out. While the 45/70 would have worked at that distance- where to hold would have been a problem.Problem was solved using my 300 Wby.

Johnny C ;D

You need to be aware that typing distances in a metric unit will cause confusion here and also put your "Manliness" in question.

I'm meeting more and more young vets from our military service who are quite comfortable using meters and I wouldn't question the manliness of any of them except for a few who are true ladies.

Dand: Agreed however we have a large number of OF's here and some would consider using metric units as Un-American and possibly "girlie" ;D
