20ga ProHunter range report
« on: March 25, 2009, 01:16:44 PM »
I Had a chance to shoot my Blued 20ga Prohunter barrel Sunday.
The barrel is topped with a Leupold duel dovetail mount and a VX-II 2-7x40.   I have been picking up slugs where I can when I can For a few months. All Slugs tested @ 50 yards Three shot groups. Temp. was about 55 . Wind was blowing a little also.
I Got it on paper with the Hornady SST's and ran into trouble from the start. I'm out of Virtical adjustment on the scope. But was able to get it to shoot to point of aim At 50 yards. I will either shim the mount or Go to a weaver style Mount when I get to it, (So I can sight Higher than 50 Yards.)
The Hornady 2 3/4" SST's  Grouped  1 7/8" Center to center
      Remington 2 3/4" Copper solids  2 3/16"
      Remington 2 3/4" Buckhammer   1"
Remington 3"      Buckhammer   13/16"  Big Clover leaf!
      Federal     3"   Barnes Hollow point   2 1/4"
      Federal    2 3/4" Barnes Hollow Point 2 3/4"
Looks Like the Cheap slugs win. Will Let you know How they do At 100 and beyond. When I get the scope mount problem fixed.  I really like this set up. Much Better than the 12ga as far as recoil.

SK330lc

Appreciate your post, anxious to hear what you do at 100 yds.  I just picked up a pro hunter frame and the first barrel I chase will likely be a slug barrel.  I think you may be convincing me that the 20 ga. is the way to go.  Im not recoil sensitive, but no use getting banged any more than need be.

Also, I believe that Hastings is coming out with a shotgun slug designed to shoot in their barrels.  That might be an option worth trying as well if they are available.

Silvertp,
The 12ga will bang you up on the bench. But never noticed it hunting..
When I get the Scope problem fixed I'll try to get to the range where there is a good bench. I was shooting of the hood of my truck at a friends farm. I figure the groups will probly shrink a little.
I'd Like to get some of the New Remington, Plastic space ship Looking rounds to try .
If I could Find them Some Of the Hastings and even some Lightfields.
What the heck its only Money Right. ;D  Ya can't take it with ya. ;)
I do hope That the SST's Will do a little better.  I Really like how they performed out of the 12ga.
I'll Keep ya posted .

Sounds good to me ...  I'll look forward to following your progress on this search for your 20 ga. loading.

Knowing you were shooting over the hood of a truck I would agree your groups will likely shrink when you make it to a bench.  Every little bit helps.

Me, Id rather get buried with my guns than with an extra $1000.

Take care

I have the 20ga Pro Hunter barrel. I havent got it dialed in yet but so far it has settled on the Winchester Platinum premier slog. It put 3 in 1 ragged hole @50 yds.. That was last fall.. Still havent got her finished. Drop

Share a story with you: I stopped by a gun shop not too long ago, and there was an almost new .20 ga rifled barrel and a 3-9x40 Bushnell 4300 Elite scope on it.  The reason the guy wanted to sell it was he couldn't get the scope dialed in.  You guessed it, SK330lc, it had been adjusted to the max, but still shot low--for the price, I couldn't turn it down, and with some new rings, it shoots like a dream.  I will use it this fall as my slug gun and park the 870 for the season.  Like your info so far--looking forward to the 100 yard info coming in.

Well Several Months Later . I Finally Took the Leupold Mount Off My 20Ga. Barrel and Installed a Weaver mount with Weaver Meduim hight rings..  She shoots like a dream.Used the 3" Rem Buckhammers sighted 3.1/2" High at 50 yards. That makes it about 1/2" to 1" High at 100 yards.  Grouped Just over an 1" at 100 yards wich is about the same as 50yards. I'm in love.   Tried the Hornady SST's again also. Not to bad about 2 1/4" Group at 100yards.  Not the best but still good enough a deer won't care.

SK330lc

Sounds like you have a shotgun  bbl that thinks it's a "varmit bbl" ;D, a 1" group is respectable for a good shooting rifle.  That combo should serve you well!

Thanks also for the information on the weaver base and rings.  I just ordered my slug barrel and was wondering what base and rings to get.  Oh yes, based on your advice and that of others I decided on the 20 ga.

Went to the "big city" 3 hours north of here (Missoula Mt) and started looking for 20 ga. slugs.  Ha, I found out real quickly that this is rifle country, and shotguns are only for shooting birds.  Well, looks like I'll  be ordering my ammo.

I just got a 20 ga slug barrel. So far the hornadays group the best 1.5 at 100.
I tried winchester gold, but they didn't group as well and extraction was sticky.
In my H&R, the winchesters did best.
