HAVE YOUR CARRY HABITS CHANGED
« on: March 26, 2009, 02:19:04 AM »
I am the first to admit that I have changed my carry habits in the last year or so.
In this little island, within the sprawling city of Houston, Deer park, I used to never carry outside my vehicle. Never felt the unction too do so.
I now carry almost everywhere I go.
Paranoia? Too some degree, but to quote the well worn statement, "that don't mean somebody ain't out to get you," I do feel the need.
I am not particularly worried that somebody wants too get "ME", but, well stuff happens---in seconds.
Our society, and this is not the results of government actions, is rapidly changeing. There is less and less recogntion of old social mores, even in rural environments.
What do you boys think? Take a shot at me if you feel the need.
Blessings

I think you are right,One of my worst fears is geing at a shopping mall or some other place when someone might plan to do some harm and being powerless to do anything. The chances are one in a million, but we still buy lottery tickets don't we.

I don't think you're paranoid William. If I lived in a place like Houston and could carry concealed like you can, I'd be a walking armory everywhere I went. Thank goodness you don't leave that weapon in your car anymore. It's not going to do you much good if the fight is in the store and your weapon is in the car.

Not paranoid just cautious..........I have also found that some of my habits are changing.  At one point I never payed much attention to where I sat when out in the public.  Now, if possible, I always try to get a place where my back is to the wall, not paranoid, just cautious.

As for carry, since day one, and after an incident in Fort Worth where the presence of a firearm likely saved my bacon, (this was before concealed carry) I don't leave home without it.

I'm still a big believer in OPEN carry as opposed to concealed. If seven patrons at IHOP have sidearms that can be viewed by the public I highly doubt a punk is gonna continue his heist. A criminal having the knowledge, and that's a stretch, that a person "might" be carrying a concealed handgun, and the same thug SEEING seven sidearms and the carriers of those guns looking at them are two TOTALLY different things. I have yet to talk to a criminal that was concerned about concealed handguns, but have talked to a few that said,"Man, that dude had a rod(gun) in his pocket, I could see the Mother F@%$#*. I ain't getting jacked(killed) like that".

I just carry more often, I am also carrying higher capacity again.
This is due to a couple of specific credible threats, not to society in general.
I do however see society circling the drain. It's just a matter of time.

Oddly enough mine have not changed since I got the permit!

I live 89 miles east of William just north of Beaumont in the woods and...........well I am no more or less paranoid than I was before. I may leave the wife at home but never the Glock!  ::)

Hey William, I have a good friend that lives in Deer Park.  We are bowhunting buds.

I guess it's like seat belts.  If you don't buckle up every time then when you need it, it won't be there ;D

Carrying a gun is much more difficult than wearing a seat belt.  Chances are you won't have it when you need it.  Especially if you are a law abiding citizen.  :(

So, has anyone here (with a permit) actually had to pull their concealed weapon out in view (thus breaking the law, of course)?   What were the consequences?  And how would they have differed had you not spilled your guts and money to the state government.  Just curious...Van

I have always carried everywhere I can leagally carry for over 30 years. Also have another in each of my truck and my 2 jeeps. The jeep that I drive 95% of the time has 2.Better to have it and not needed it,than to need it and not have it.I also carry at house.ALWAYS have one with me even if I go outside to walk the dogs or get the mail.Always have one when I answer the door.Anybody(my friends) that knock on my door know this.I just hope I never have to use one,but if I do it will be with "no hesitation".........Rick

I still do not carry enough due to employement, etc. but yes my attention to carrying has increased dramatically in the last few months.

Just look at the protests after the killing of 4 cops - and they were NOT for the needless death of our public servants!  These are the folks that elected Obamanation - I need not say anything more.

All are good responses.
Hummmm--six degrees of seperation.
Carry legally--doesn't bother me, just did it too long I guess.
Reasoning, I guess, is the paranoia/concern of the day. Just getting too close to the burg.
Up in the piney woods of S/E Texas is where we were not too long ago, well, at least in same concerns. I always carried into Houston--considered these days as a free fire zone.

This required a special response.
I wouldn't give a hang about what an employer likes or dislikes. I may not carry into the office but i dang sure would ignore his pleas for the parking lot.
Seems like that is what the Texas Senate thought also, this week, when they passed on a bill too the House allowing carry in a locked vehicle at work.
One Senator explored the real world of carry very well when he said "heck, most do it anyway." This just takes away the employer's feelings of responsibility.
Maybe that last word should be "control."

Smart man, William. I carry everywhere I'm allowed and some places where I'm sure would not give me permission if I asked. That's the whole point of carrying "concealed", the "predators" have no idea who is capable of ending their assault and the "sheep" can believe all is well in "Obamaland" without "pepper" spray.
I had a friend, who recently got his CCW license, tell me he got his "minister's" permission to carry in his church. I'm going to ask mine tomorrow (if he says no, I may change churches :D.  Being prepared for the worst makes living for the best possible.

Why would anyone go thru all the paperwork, jump thru hoops, and expense of getting a CCW if they were not going to carry all the time?   That license isn't a status symbol it is a LICENSE to carry a CONCELLED weapon.  And yes there are some area's where you cant carry however you can just as well change you habits and avoid those area's, and that means any business that doesnt support the CCW law, DONT support their business and let it be known why you dont go into their business period.   Jim

Living in 1 of 2 states that doesn't permit concealed carry is hard.  In the 60s when I first got back frlom the war I carried everywhere and didn't concern myself with the law.  As I got older and more concervative regarding the law I began to leave the gun in my vehicle most of the time.  Now that I am retired and things seem to be going to crap I have began to carry more often again.  I try to evaluate the need but I do realize that the more often I am without the gun the more chance I have of not having it when I need it.  I really envy the rest of the country but we probably won't join you in the near future.

Here in N.Y. you go througt all the paper work and the money I think in westchester $150.00+ for a target permit, this allows you to carry your firearm to and from the range only. For a god given right and the bill of rights .what if in N.Y. we did the same to the 1st. admendment?

Carrying a firearm is like having fire insurance on your home.  Do you say to yourself "I don't expect I'll need it this month" and not pay the premium or do you have fire insurance 24/7/365?

I have only had my CCW license for about three years, but find myself carrying more now as compared to when I first got it. My only dilemna is with the kids around. For those of you that have kids, what do you do? I want to have it in the truck or on me all the time, but I am naturally always worried about youngsters around. What do you guys do about that situation?

YA GOTTA BE CAREFULL !  If you have it on you then it is where you need it to be and it is safe!
If you have it in the house then it needs to be where only you can get it! At night thats in the bed or as close to me as i can get it! I raised 7 kids and they all made it just fine with loaded firearms in the house 24 /7

Due to carrying being such a pain in the butt, my carry guns are getting smaller and lighter. I started with a full size 9, then a Glock 19, and now 99% of the time a Smith Airweight 38 and sometimes when I really need to go small, a Davis 32ACP derringer. I never had to shoot or even clear the holster, but twice having a gun saved my bacon by just opening my coat and putting my hand on the grips. These are the instances that don't make it to the news or the stats concerning people saved by guns. I wonder how many times that happens in a year across the country. I hate carrying but I could never forgive myself if someone I love were to be injured or killed because I was too lazy to carry that day.

When my kids were young, I took a 38 revolver and put it into a compartment I made in the wall inside my closet. I then took some heavy paper and taped it over the hole, finally giving it a coat of joint compound and paint. It matched the rest of the wall perfectly but if you knew where it was, you could just jab your hand into the wall and come out with a loaded gun. The closet was right next to my bed and was the only accessible loaded gun in the house for 15 years. The best way to prevent your kids from messing with or searching for your guns is to take them out shooting as soon and as often as you can. Start with a piece of plywood and blow a hole in it with a 12 gauge. This gives kids an appreciation of what it really means to point a gun at something or someone. It's not like the cartoons where daffy duck picks his face up off the ground and sticks it back on his head.

All of it is excellent advice. Glad to hear of your experience Oldshooter. I was brought up ultra safety conscious, but I guess that is why I am concerned and always look for advice from folks who contend with the same concerns.

Since I have gotten my Kel-Tec P-11 and got it broke in and a few hundred rounds through it, I have carried anytime I'm gonna be somewhere I can carry. If Im going into the bank or post office (which I walk to most of the time for exercise) I dont carry. If I'm just going uptown on a walk, damn right ill carry. Just heading to work? Nope. stopping somewhere before work, then yes I will carry.

Gotta figure something out with nicer weather coming...gonna be harder to carry now. NONE of my shorts allow enough room to IWB. Better lose some weight :D And Since I can wear shorts to work, not even then.

I dont feel threatened. Im not a small guy and I wouldnt make an "easy" target. I dont wear terribly nice clothes or drive a nice car so Anyone to think I have money would be wrong (I rarely have cash on me as well...) BUT I dont mind having my gun on my side, either.

Like the NY Lottery motto: Hey, you never know...
