Cleaning mouthcalls
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:55:36 AM »
Hey Guys,
I've only been turkey hunting a couple of seasons, and I've always used box and slate calls. I've decided this year to try my luck with mouth calls.
My question is, after using the calls, at the end of the day or if you're not going out for a few days, what do you use to clean your mouth calls?
Would a diluted solution of bleach and water work, or mouthwash? Or do you even bother?
Thanks

unless I've dropped them in or on something other than ordinary dirt, I usually don't clean mine with anything but my saliva. I do occasionally rinse them with water, and sometimes will soak them in a mouthwash/water solution before using them after sitting in the fridge from last season. The condom latex used in making mouth calls is sensitive to heat/sunlight and any type of mineral oil. Lip balms sometimes contain mineral oil and will contribute to premature breakdown. It will also absorb flavor, so myself, I wouldn't use bleach.

I don't clean them.  Sometimes they're still OK for a second season, usually I just get a new one.

I usually rinse mine in warm water and let dry, but like dukkillr, I usually buy another one next season. The thing I hate about that,  is when I find one I really like, they discontinue it... ::)

Rinse under a small stream of water.  The latex reed rips easy.

I rinse mine off then carefully ease a round toothpick in between the latex on each side so they can dry without sticking together.  Before using I'll soak'm in a little mouthwash sometimes.  I've got a whole box full of new ones that just didn't sound right like the old ones. ??? Walt
Oh yeah....I keep'm in the frig too.

i was told by a call rep to keep them in the ref. and cold when not in use like the off season .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
