Busta (suggestions for sabotless projectiles)
« on: March 26, 2009, 04:31:57 PM »
I looked at a bunch of your targets    :o

so I'm out at the range today when it dawned on me..... I think your best groups are without sabots

am I right?

also do you make your wads or buy them....

I think I might try to shoot some sabotless projectiles.  If I can find some that won't put me in the poor house...

Also I told the boys over at marlinowners.com about the metrics unlimited breechplug, but I didn't use any of your pics.  I thought they would like to know.

With the Huntsman, you may be right. But remember, those BH209 groups with the NEF Huntsman were shot with the Hubbard plug. I also tried Blackhorn with the .25 ACP plug and primer carriers with mixed to poor results.

The wads are from Cabelas, I'm 99.9% sure that Sagebrush makes them for them also being from Sidney, NE. The ones I have are .518" diameter x .060" thick. They also make them .030" thick. If you had the gasket material and a punch, they could be made very easily. They were around $16 for 1000, or figure out to 1.6 cents a piece.

As far as conicals, Bullshop would be the least expensive, and they are top notch. You can have Dan size them to any full thousandth diameter between .499" and .505" IIRC. He also will size to some half thousandths sizes as well, the .5045" is very popular with the Bo Clerke barreled Whites.

I haven't been on marlinowners, I'll give it a look sometime.

John nice to here of another near convert to full bore slugs. I have gone exclusivly with full bore and am very happy . I have used lots of Busta's insight on it even though he uses and works way more inovative than I do with his powders and ignition sources . I have found loads for all my Muzzle Loaders that are fantastic for how I hunt with them (less than 75yards) welcome back to the no plastic in my bullet world. Kurt

okay what do you think about this....

buy some .502 cast bullets like this
or some other diameter, but .50 cal

then get a swaging or sizing die, run them through to match my sidekick/huntsman bore

get some wads

and I'm in business right?
what do you think

John,

You can order either No Excuses or Bullshop conicals in .503", they work very well in the .502" H&R/NEF bores. You will get .0005" of engraving all the way around and it will stay put on your charge. You can also shoot with or without the wads, but I prefer them for consistency.

That bullet in your pic is probably hard-cast, you don't want them for muzzleloaders, unless you are shooting them in a sabot. For full bore slip-fit conicals you want pure lead, that way they will obturate fully into the rifling grooves upon ignition.

The H&R/NEF's will shoot conicals as well as any rifle, you just want to make sure you get the right weight for the 1:28 twist rifling. 440 to 460 grain bullets are what you want to be looking at, 460's shoot outstanding.

Give Dan a call at Bullshop, get some .503" NEx 460's in pure lead. These measure right around .970" long and are legal for Colorado if you ever want to go.

What powder do you plan on shooting?

Busta, I'm using Pyrodex RS

I've made up my mind to cast my own bullets, and I'm takin a hard look at this mold:

Black Powder Bullet Mould: 50 Caliber Plains - #508656Bullet # : 508656

Grain: 395gr

Single Cavity # : 2654656

This is the .50 cal version of our Plains Bullets which offer greater bearing surface areas for improved accuracy. It also features a two diameter design for easy loading. Fits most traditional .50 cal muzzleloaders

has anybody used this boolit?  I admit the tapered design looks good to me.

What is a hard-cast bullet? Your comments indicate there are a variety of possible ingredients [alloys] of cast bullets . Can you recommend some reading material for a "newbie" to pick up on casting bullets?    Ken

Pete if your low on them Maxies you can not go wrong by switching to 460 gr No excuses I tried a couple of weights and Busta is right on about the 460 grainers I have a hard time thinking there is a better full bore out there for the Huntsman . I have bought a good supply of them now so I will not have to look for anything more for quite some time. I also found a large supply of 385gr for my .45 Huntsman and they are just as accurate. If I didn't like the Buffalo bores so well for my .58's it would be shooting them too. Kurt

I would recommend either the 460 grain MT NEx, or the 445 grain UC Short in pure lead from The Bull Shop with Bull Shop #2 Lube.

http://home.mchsi.com/~rltsr/bullshop.jpg

The prices are for Antimonial Alloys, add 15% for pure lead. Still a major bargain for one of the best conicals on the planet. Read the ***special note*** on the top of this page.

http://bullshop.gunloads.com/prices.html

I just went to the Home Page, looks like Dan is down from April 1 to October 15.

No Excuses 460 grain is the same bullet as the Bull Shop 460 grain MT NEx, but the Bull Shop #2 lube is superior.

Go here and you can design your own mold, I have included my ideal design. 460 gr in pure lead, 70% meplat, will kill anything in NA.  ;)
