I quit smoking forty years ago, and am sorry that I ever started.  My wife's family raised tobacco and it fed them and put her through college.  I have helped pull it and house it, but am really happy that I no longer have to do that.  My people were in sawmills and orchards, which I consider a much more honorable calling.  My house is built on an old plantbed, and we sold our tobacco acreage years ago.  The allotment system that the government used to control the number of farmers in the market is gone.  The auction system that was used to sell flue-cured tobacco is gone.  The farmers now contract directly with the companies, and no one knows what price someone else is getting.  The auction system was totally open, and all one had to do was take a look at the grade card on the pile of tobacco and the weight and know who much a man got for his tobacco, and what quality tobacco he made.  It used to be that everyone in my community had a tobacco crop, but now only about four men in the community raise any, and most of them are getting out.

As for growing your own, tobacco is grown in Canada and in Germany.  I was shocked to look out the window of a bus in Germany and see fields of tobacco.  It has the smallest seed of any plant, so small that it is mixed with sand to plant it.  The plant grows the most of any agricultural plant and matures in 90 days.  I can't think of any area in the US, outside of the high Rockies and Mount Washington in New Hampshire, where it could not be grown.  Curing it is another matter.  Burley is air-cured, and dark tobacco is cured over a smoldering fire.  The Turks cure Latakia by laying it up on the roof and letting it dry that way.  Making bright leaf would be a real trick on the home level.  When bulk barns came in, we had to fight a bunch of fires in them and they were nasty.

Hello Dale

I smoked for 35 years quite heavily averaging 2 to 3 pks a day. I loved it but it was killing me. I could hardly climb the NE Pa hills and mountains  hunting without stopping for a smoke as a breather. I tried a ton of programs over the years. Finally my doc prescribed Chantix. If you really want to quit Chantix will do it. I stand on the pedistal and preach it to all.  If you have a prescription plan they most likely will pay. Its a 3 month program and if you truelly want to quit it will do it. If you buy it outright it is cheaper than 5.00 a day.2 1/2 years and I dont  even miss it a bit. I smell better, breath great, my  wife and friends enjoy my company more.  You cant use the when they get so much I will quit excuse. I always seemed to respect other peoples wishs and stood off when smoking. Boon

we  need  more  smokers......to save social  security

the  more of  you  that die  early  from smoking
the  more  money left  in social security  for  us non-smokers

but  it  is wrong  to single someone out with a tax

now  we have  the sin taxes  smoking , drinking  ect.
and  the  90% tax  on CEO bonuses

next we will see an ammo tax

if  you  know some one  that  is dieing  from smoking
take your kids or grand kids to visit  them  so they can see  first  hand  what its about

you  can  cuss  in front  of my kids  if  you like....they  know it is because  your ignorent
but i  would never allow  an  (censored word) to smoke around  my  kids
parden  my language  but  that is the way  i feel about any one  that sets that example in front of my child
what  you do in front of  your  kids  is up to  you......but  i think  your stupid  to make a kid  think  that is OK

especially  if that child looks up  to  you

I quit smoking seven years ago. If I had not ,I am sure I would not be here now. I was a four pack a day smoker. I tried many times to quit and could not, but when I watched my wife die , because she could not quit and die a slow and terrible death, I quit!
If we had both quit many years ago, I am sure she would be here with me now. As she was ten years my junior.  If you smoke QUIT, if anyone you love smokes hound them to quit.

I quit for ten years. Most miserable ten years I ever spent.
I smoke when I want one. Pack a day is pretty high count for me.
I can think of other folks habits that directly effect/affect my health and we joke about them.
Not all smokers die from the effects/affects are are harmed by them.
I just don't think that it is correct to TARGET any segment of the population with a tax aimed at that group.

I guess the moral to story is everyone has a vice, and it could be something innocuous taken to excess, but like bill said, there's no reason to tax it just because its more likely to be a hazard or excessed.

Hell, if we could tax "power trip" some elements of government would fund themselves.

Well, when taxes on cigarettes are high enough that people stop using them and the revenue drops off, maybe they can start on coffee taxes. The caffeine isn't good for you and can cause health problems. I don't drink coffee, so the increased price won't affect me. It won't be my money the government is taking more and more of to save me from myself and supposedly use to help fund health care for caffeine abusers, so I won't be required to care about the people who can't get through their day without their coffee. Coffe just went to $20 a pound?.....oh well, not my problem......

Smokes are slated for a $0.75 increase here tomorrow which will put the average cost for Grade A Brands at around $5.75 per pack and $49.00 per carton...  Guess it is time to quit... I just can not justify paying for Obamas Suckusdry Plan by way of a bad habbit... Just wait I wonder what will be next...

When it comes to taxes, the only good tax is the one on somebody else.  Thank goodness I never started smoking.  To those of you that do, I owe you a lot.  As a NC resident, you probably funded my education.  My family once grew tobacco and it payed our bills.

I think my vodka consumption is funding a family of potato farmers in Russia, except that it is mostly made from grain now.  Maybe a midwestern wheat farmer is benefiting from my habit.

When my doctor told me the cigaretts had contributed to my heart condition and that I need a triple by-pass I didn't have any problem quiting.  That was 19 years ago, I just wish I had given them up sooner.   ???

When I started it was the cool thing to do, a carton of smokes was about $1.20 at the Post Exchange, you could smoke almost everywhere, and most everyone did.

I recently read that smoking shortens a man's ability to have sex as a result of hardening of the arteries, if that is not sufficent cause for you to quit you are beyond help.  Another thing, doesn't it blow you mind to see a beautiful woman but when you get close she smells like a butt can.  In a recent hospital stay I told a beautiful young nurse she smelled bad, this was not to be mean but to point out that she was offensive to the patients.

It cost me $10.25 for 3 packs last month. I have been paying about the same for years. They might go a a few cents here or there but this is nuts. Two weeks ago those same 3 packs cost me $12.75. The first of the month they said it was going up another $0.60 a pack. That put me at about $14.75 for those same smokes that I paid $10.25. That looks like a 1/3 increase just over this past month to me. I know I need to quit. I know it is killing me. I am pissed. Dale

Here in Pa they went up $0.50 a pack this month and I bitched about it to the clerk at the store. I know it is not her fault but in her next breath she said they will be going up another $0.60 a pack on the first of April. I smoke the cheapest smokes I can find and it is close to $5.00 a pack now.

I am so hearing you on this.  I bought the last carton I intend to buy.  At this point I cant afford it anymore...I can buy crack cheaper than I can buy a pack of smokes!  What really burns me is I am being charged sales tax on the tax that has already been added to a pack of smokes to pay for everyones pet prodjects and programs.

Alright. Think of something you use everyday. Now think about it going up in price by a 1/3 in a day. I will ask you that when ammo and powder go up. I don't know maybe they decide to tax Dibeates meds. Dale

It's easy for a nonsmoker to say "why don't you just quit?"
I am 38 and have chewed since I was 15. I started because it was cool, all my older cousins did it..... I always thought I could quit at any time. I have tried nicorette, zyban, cold turkey, nothing has worked.

If anything good has come from my nicotine addiction was the realization is that I have an addictive personality, and it kept me from smoking pot or worse because I was afraid I would like it too much.

How many of you did something stupid as a teen and are still paying for it now?, My stupid mistake was getting addicted to tobacco.

Don't judge someone until you have walked in their shoes, Isn't that how the saying goes?

It was not all of them. It was just a few. I don't think I went more than 2 weeks clean the whole time I was in that program. I hooked up with a drug councilor and I give her a lot of credit. She had been down the same path as I and knew what I was going through. It took me a very long time to get clean. I had a sister that got me into it in the first place. She is dead now from a OD. I quit all my friends that did that sort of stuff so I would not be around it. The thing is there were times I had not done any in 6 months or more and then my sister would show up. She knew ( I was making real good money at the time ) if she gave me a taste that she could get high on my dollar until I was out of money. Like I said I have been clean for over 10 years. I really think it is closer to 12 years because my daughter just turned 13 and after she was born I decided to get my act together. I can honestly say even after all these years it would be hard to turn it down if it were in front of me. I would say to myself a little won't hurt. The thing is with me there is no such thing as a little. Like I said I don't even know where to get it anymore and that is a good thing. Dale
