Just got back from the range with the .50 cal........
« on: March 27, 2009, 11:03:43 AM »
I took my .50 cal Encore to test out some Blackhorn 209 powder with TC SHockwave 250gr bullets and man oh man was it IMPRESSIVE ;D First three shot group at 100 yards was 1"  WITH NO SWABBING! All I did was load and shoot. The first group was about 4" high, 3" left. After shooting a few more to get it center It was pretty much shooting them in the same hole, easily UNDER an inch. I am sold on this powder. It smokes ALOT less than Pyrodex and cleans very easy. Four patches soaked in TC No.13 and it was clean. If you are looking for a great powder try this stuff! ;)

It is more expensive than Pyrodex or 777 but it is worth it in my opinion. I just got done cleaning it and it was SUPER easy. I ran three or four patches with #13 on them before I left the range and when I pulled it apart to clean it, it looked perfectly clean. I ran a few patches with solvent through it and called it quits. I was shooting 110 grains and I think I may back it off to 100 because the recoil was pretty stout, much more than the same amount of Pyrodex! :o

If I may recomend you guys going to Modern Inline Muzzle Loader Forum. You will find out allot of info on Black Horn 209 such as best primers, grain equivilent to other powder like 777 and pyrodex. Allot of members have been working with BH209 for months. You will learn allot about what many feel is the best thing to happen to ML.

You might want to try to use Hoppes or something similar for cleanup with the blackhorn powder. I love this stuff it really shoots great and cleans up easily and no swabbing in between shots. I'll never shoot tripple 7 again!

I am going to get some Hoppes the next time I am at walmart. I have never shot 777 but have used Pyrodex for a long time. I have a full can left and it will most likely never be touched again! :o This stuff is awesome!

I'm totally sold on BH209. I gave away several bottles of 777 and Shockys Gold, including all of my left over pellets.

The BH209 is expensive but it's worth the price to me. If the price eventuality comes down I'll just us more of it. My most impressive group was with a max charge (weighed) of BH209 under a 250gr Shockwave using a magnum 209 primer. I shot a 2" group at 200 yards on more than 1 occasion.

I'll be using that load on whitetails this year and still need to verify the bullet drop against the Nikon BDC reticle in my scope. So far it appears to be very close.

What kind of drop are you getting at 200? Do you have it dead on at 100? I wanted to try mine at 200 yesterday but I ran out of bullets ;D

I really couldn't say other than to say that I sighted the scope in at 100 yds using the 100 yard crosshair and did a test at 200 yards using the 200 yard reticle ring. The impact @ 200yds was very close to the point of aim.
